re: food stamps

There is no perfect solution. There will always be the "what ifs and what a outs."
On balance, I think the benefits of limiting purchases outweigh not limiting the types of purchases BUT, the food lobby would never allow it. They are very powerful and would NEVER let soda, chips, cookies, etc be limited or comp,steely restricted.

I don't think most people who object to buying high-end or junk foods on FS object to a poor person eating them. They just want those foods bought with their own cash.

They are high carbohydrate, high GI foods that contribute quite a lot to obesity. There is no nutritional benefit from white rice or pasta.

Sure there is benefit from them.
Not everyone is obese or at risk for obesity.
Entire cultures have much of their diet as rice-based.
Neither rice or pasta are bad foods.

Just to prove that there are responsible food stamp users:

I bought some fruit snacks, ice cream bars and soda and used cash to purchase them.

 

I use my card to purchase the pricier things like fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products (the amount of milk we use is insane), and meat.

I understand what it's for so I try to use it responsibly. Have I purchased junky foods with my card? Yes. Do I try to avoid doing so? Absolutely.

I understand that it is supplemental. I rarely feed my kids junk so basically, the card is being used to feed them because without them, we wouldn't be receiving it. I pay for most of my want purchases out of my own money.

If we take junk away then someones gonna kill someone. Just saying. Maybe that soda is the only good part of their day.

I know the best part of my week is baking with my daughter. She wants to be a pastry chef when she grows up so we maje cake, cookies, pies or brownies from scratch once a week. If that was taken from me id be very sad.

They're not advocating for flour, sugar, eggs, and whatever else you use to bake a dozen cookies to be taken away. It's the processed, ready-made crap.

A lot of the things that go into those aren't necessarily "junk" on their own though like milk, eggs, depending on the type of flour you use, fresh fruit if you use those in your pies... If they did impose restritcions, I think itt would still be totally manageable to keep your thing going. That's a cute little tradition you've got. I bet she will grow up with fond memories of that time spent together.

I'd never want to see those baking items excluded.
Soda, on the other hand, people should either find their own money for it or skip it.

I think my biggest pet peeve is someone I know who would buy LOADS of soda with their food stamps and take the refund money and buy a dime or two or a case of beer (on purpose). Yay you, you got your foodstamps, and your soda, and then you got to buy some extra beer or weed. It was their dire straights money like "smurf, outta money, lets go take in my 500 soda cans from the last month and get our buzz on." That's some bullsmurf, but the stores let FS buy soda and bottled water (nothing wrong with bottled water. All I buy bc our water is fluoridated) so in the end FS covers the deposit on the cans and bottles and the FS recipient reaps the benefits. Now what's a case of beer or a dime bag in the end, it is what it is barely a measley $20 that FS paid for when it covered the can deposit. Well...that's $120 in soda to be able to afford to take your cans and bottles in and buy weed or beer. Its totally possible and people do it...and it kind of annoys me. Its like having your cake and eating it too. If you just spent $120 on soda to get a little bit of cash back, not a whole lot different than selling your stamps...you and/or your kids just end up pounding unhealthy soda all month. You still arent getting any nutrition out of that $120, no better than if you had just traded your card for some cash.
Yeah, I probably sound petty for this but its shameful to me that people would blow their FS buying smurffy drinks, in order to buy drugs or beer. Its just rotten. If you can afford weed, but weed. If you can afford soda, buy soda. If you can't afford food for you and your kids, don't buy $100s of dollars in soda to get some extra cash. Put the food in your kids mouths and fill up the cabinets.

Not every state has deposits on cans. That's an issue with your state, not FS recipients.

Here, you can cash them in, but you MIGHT get 10 bucks for like 6 black bags.

When I got FS, my husband bought soda with them. He's the only one that drinks it. He can't work without it (the caffeine and sugar keep him going...he does physical labor). So what?

You just sound bitter.
