I buy soda because it helps my dysphagia.

That's the thing though. Many people FILL their shopping carts with unhealthy things and snacks. I personally dont care about a 12 pack of soda in a cart filled with fresh produce, meats, grains, etc. But to fill it with chips, cookies, cinammon rolls, ice cream, a bunch of sugary drinks, etc? It's quite excessive. You just KNOW their children are not getting the nutrition they need.

Of course, but MANY parents who are NOT on assistance, buy junk food for their kids too....and there is NO way to stop them. It's all a crap shoot. If it were up to me, I'd have food stamps set so only a certain set amount could be spent on junk foods a month- let's say you get $400 monthly- 25 of that could be spent on soda, sugary drinks, etc.

I think people can be very judgmental though. I buy soda because it helps my migraines, and I refuse to take medications (I have a horribly low tolerance) so the caffeine in soda is all that helps me unfortunately. I would take caffeine pills if I could ever find the damn things around here lol. But the point is, my cart is full of healthy things to make good meals out of. People will see ONE box of soda, and I see the eyebrows go up because I have my daughter with me- like they think I'm giving her the soda or something equally ridiculous LOL.

Yeah, if it were up to me, I'd put a ban or limit on ALL junk foods. Obesity is a huge issue in this country, and it's because we're too busy to cook good foods, and our children rely on technology for entertainment rather than good old fashioned playing in the sunshine.

Agreed.

And I know they looked at me like that too. But what may seem like a lot of junk to someone (on the occasion I buy it), may not be. If I have some crap in my cart (say chips for instance)..that's because I have 7 people living in my house and most days, there's 11+ here.

I'm not anti-junk. I'm not against poor people having soda. I'm against junk being bought by money that is not their own, personla money or from people that volunteer to treat them to junk. I think tax dollars should go to needs and not wants.

Yep.

If they want a pack of cheetohs, they deserve a pack of cheetohs... as long as they pay for it out of THEIR paycheck.

Everyone has the right to food, clean water, shelter, and basic medical care. Everyone does NOT have the right to "treat themselves" and just do whatever they want at the expense of others.

So the FS pay for the people outside of your household.

I don't get them anymore but when I did, we took turns. My brother and his wife and kids come over like everyday.

Like he brings snacks for the kids one day, I provide them the next. It's the same with meals. We waste less this way as everything gets eaten. It ends up cheaper really.

First, congratulations for getting off of FS. You should be proud.

Second, I get that eating "big family style" is much less expensive than 2 or 3 households making a meal. What you do makes sense from a money, fun and sanity standpoint.
I just don't think cooking for a large group justifies tax money being spent on chips or soda.

You realize that if someone uses their foodstamps regularly on those outside of their household budget unit that it's technically welfare fraud, right? Not that one can prove it but I bust people for omiting mandatory hh members on their cases allllllll the time. Unfortunately, not all welfare workers are as attention detailed as I can be.

I guess I'm a bitch, though, because I don't think that anyone "deserves" treats. You earn them. Eating off of someone else's dime? Nope, no junk food for you.

Inviting someone over for dinner is welfare fraud?

I don't see how.
They don't live here and making dinner together or giving snacks to their kids, or they give them to mine, isn't against the law. And how could it be proven anyhow? Seeing as when I had them they were supplemental and I bought food with cash too.
I didn't omit anything.

So you're saying that when my niece would (still does) come over every weekend and I fed her that I was somehow breaking a rule? Should people just eat in front of their guests? The food would be made regardless so should I just throw any leftovers out?

That's silly.

And btw, I buy chips maybe once a month. Usually on those days where I don't have time to cook so I make sandwiches and we have chips and a veggie tray..
