I agree but there is a big difference between teaching and mandating.

Wic is allowed to mandate. Why not food stamps? Both are government programs.

It's not the same, you get what you get with WIC because they choose the purchases, right? Like types of formula ect. With stamps you buy what your family eats, your choice. But... aren't there some restrictions on food stamps already?

Anyways, the route you are promoting wouldn't it be better to just ban all unhealthy foods?

Ive seen people get steak, lobster, soda, ice cream, etc on them.

And for the mama who said your family, you choose what they eat, etc.... it's need based. If you need it, IMO, you cant afford to be choosy on what is offered.

I support getting needed foods on food stamps. i dont support "wants" and soda is a want.

Basics. Lean meats, unlimited produce, grains (breads, etc), milk and milk products, baking items. Basically... everything at the OUTSIDE aisles of the grocery store. Not the middle aisles with top ramen, frozen burritos, etc.

And for the record, I think all that stuff should be banned for everyone. Most of it has zero nutritional value for anyone.

Well you're just nitpicking now. Obviously I said things like Ramen and frozen burritos, etc. Dried beans and peanuts are usually in the produce section (at least they are at my store, as is granola) and obviously juice too. But sugary cereals and sugary juices, I say no.

and FYI... I make homemade salsa all the time. With things I buy in the produce section. WITHOUT all the funky chemicals and additives.

It's always been cheaper for me to buy salsa than make it. What about frozen veggies? They can be better than some "fresh" produce.

I wasn't 100% rigid with the no middle of the store comment. That is "usually" where they keep things like ramen, hamburger helper, frozen pizza, etc. Obviously they are healthier versions of food in the middle of the store. I think you took that too literal. I dont care about frozen veggies. Seriously, most "quick" foods are filled with unnecessary fats, calories, and have very little vitamins. Maybe it's cheaper, but it's definitely healthier than jars. When I've bought things to make it, it costs me about 5 dollars and makes a large bowl. shrug.

My husband and I both work full time. I'm going to college and have 6 months left of my 4 year degree. We barely make it. It's unfair that people who are in need are able to buy luxuries we cannot, when we're working so hard. Most of the foods I see people buying..... they are not needed. I dont care about things that have nutritional value, where ever it comes from in the store, but I dont appreciate seeing people loading up their carts with potato chips, cookies, ice cream sandwiches, and 3 12 packs of coke. I would much rather see people making smart decisions for themselves and their children.
