Well you're already one step ahead because you are shooting in manual, and you seem to have a good grasp of what everything does

I try! I hate not being perfect right away   drives me crazy haha.

Haha you'll get it! And then it'll be second nature. You'll be able to change settings and stuff on the fly like it's nobody's business lol.

I adore my 50mm f/1.8 D! Adore it! I have a "walk around" lens that is great too but for family portraits, etc. the 50 mm is awesome.

I certainly agree to invest in a prime lens. Even when just "starting out" and training on the camera. The difference will amaze and every lens is a "re-training", IMO. I've had to learn each of mine individually. Lens factor is even more important than body of camera.
