Why go to the hospital if you don't trust modern US healthca

posted 22nd Feb
Seriously, I just read a thread about a girl that wanted to go to the hospital but didn't want them to do any of the interventions that one would benefit from by being at a hospital. There were a lot of others in there that were also adamant about not wanting most of the interventions and even bragging about telling the nursing staff/tech staff to get lost despite the staff having reasons to perform the care they were there to do. My question is this- if you truly believe that all of the things "aren't necessary" then why not just deliver your baby at home? Hospitals do a lot of things that are precautionary/prophylactic/just-in-case sort of measures... and while they aren't "necessary" at the moment, they could be extremely beneficial in the event of a complication. Or they may be doing some things as a means to prevent a complication down the road- taking your odds from 1 in 100 to 1 in 10,000 or something.

And all the people that say that the infant/mother mortality rates in these United States of America are higher than those of any other developed nation-- there have not been any studies out there yet (that I am aware of anyhow) that take into consideration that we are a nation with one of the largest (the highest?) obesity/overweight populations (and co-morbidities associated with) AND we have a phenomenon not seen in many other countries in that we are using technology to get women pregnant that wouldn't have been able to get pregnant 15 years ago (be it because of age, infirmary, infertility... we have much more complicated pregnant ladies than many other countries.)

Discuss... I'm interested.

The reason the other woman was going to a Hospital, or even birthing center was because her insurance would not pay for a home birth. She stated she would love to do it, but it was a money thing.

I think I know what thread you're talking about and was wondering the reasoning behind most of the posts.

I agree. Im all for natural but I'm happy and grateful to have wonderfully educated and thorough drs who take precautions because without them my baby would have died.

I think that what one mother decided to do is none of my business. It's her right. She explained her reasons in her post. Your whole post seems like you are attacking her.

A lot of woman feel safer in the hospital for those "just in case" moments like a life or death situation.
Nothing wrong with that except it's pretty rude to tell a member of the medical staff. to "get lost" for doing their job. They are there to help you.

Genuinely I was reading the posts and became really interested in the topic. I thought, "What an awesome debate and discuss topic."

I do believe birth in the United States is over medicalized, but it does not make any sense to go into a hospital, and disrespect their workers. Unless of course, they are disrespecting you.

You can go to a hospital and refuse most interventions. Some women may not want all of the precautionary interventions, but want to be in a hospital in case something happens that requires intervention.

With my youngest, every time I was having contractions, I was sent to labor and delivery. Eventually, I learned what I could refuse and what was just a good idea. I got in an argument with a nurse because she insisted on giving me a catheter before she would give me the meds to stop my contractions. I had already had this done several times, and each time I ended up with a bladder infection that caused more contractions. So I just yelled until I got my way. It is possible to have things your way under hospital care.

I'd love to have a homebirth, but I'm not going to give birth in a house that's not mine, and especially without a midwife to help/support me.

How would you even need to pay for a home birth?
Don't you already own the home that you plan on birthing in?

Just curious.
