Backyard breeding

posted 21st Feb
Does this bother anyone else? So many animals are killed in shelters every day and I have this girl on facebook asking what people are interested in buying because she wants to start breeding. I didn't say anything but damn do I want to.

It drive me Effing mad! My neighbors irresponsibly breed chihuahuas and they are constantly yapping all the gosh darn time! I can't let my dog outside when its nice because they just throw the dogs out there and don't let them in and the chihuahuas piss her off so she tries to get through the fence at them (funny thing is she ONLY does this with their dogs). They breed the mother with her sons, and breed the daughter with her father and brothers its gross. Then they charge people $250 for sick inbred dogs. I keep wanting to call animal control but I'm afraid they will take the dogs to kill shelter.

It's bothers me, but most people don't realize how many homeless pets are already out there looking for someone to love them, or they just don't care. Cause for her it's business and money so she probably could care less!

So you'd rather subject the dogs to continual breeding than run the possibility of them being euthanized?

Uh, okay.

Yes. It makes me sick as a horse trainer to see so many unwanted horses. The ban on slaughter has had a major effect on the equine world. There are way to many and people just will not stop breeding them. Sadly nothing we can do about it.

I'm not even sure they would do anything. The dogs they breed are taken care of. They aren't sick, they are fed. They don't leave them outside in cold weather, they are just more annoying than anything. And yes at least this way the damn dogs are alive.

That & places like Petland...(although I've heard Petland is based off of backyard breeders). I live next to an Amish community & that area is overrun with backyard breeders!!

It does, but there just isn't much to be said about it.

A lot of people honestly think their dogs are worth breeding because they're pure blood. Also, well "bred" dogs are so expensive, that there is a market for "backyard breeders" so it will continue to happen.

Personally I really like the places that have made it a requirement to fix a dog unless it has a medical problem that makes that unsafe or you purchase a special permit in order to breed them.

My sister has "bred" a few batches of pit bull puppies and I hate it. There are SO MANY pit bulls in the shelters here. Everyone thinks they should get 200 a pop for what are usually mutts.

And, I'm ALL for breeding when it's done right. When it's done right however people rarely make a profit for it though.

Some degree of in and line breeding is actually common and necessary to strengthen desirable traits.

It's smurfed up though that you'd rather the dogs be backbred than possibly euthanized. Backbreeding is really cruel to do to any animal and rates right up there with other forms of physical animal abuse. Backbreeding can kill a bitch, especially in small and toy breeds.

Like I said the dogs that they breed together are taken care of. They are well fed, and aren't sick. Right now there are no puppies there so I don't exactly have proof of their breeding. I just moved here in September when SO cam back from Afghanistan. Not sure what animal control would even do. Its not like they keep the dogs in cages and starve them and make them wallow in their own filth.

BYB is a practice that drives me nuts. I don't see anything wrong with breeding for desirable, quality lines and traits in various breeds but doing it with no knowledge and compassion just pisses me off to no end. It's not fair for the backyard bred animals already sitting in shelters, it's not fair for reputable breeders, and it's especially not fair to the animals suffering through irresponsible breeding practices.

We bought a Rottweiler from a breeder because we wanted a Rottie with papers. He got hit a few weeks ago. I miss him terribly. If we ever get another dog I would like a shelter dog. I feel like we made the wrong choice because I went to the humane society a few weeks later to donate cat food and there was a bunch of Rottweilers that I could have easily loved just as much... even without those 60 dollar papers

I don't understand why someone would care about papers unless they planned to show the dog.
