We always do a brisket and potato salad and beans that can be prepared beforehand and then warmed up or served cold.

We always grill hamburgers and hotdogs. (Their birthdays are in July) we also have potato chips and then the cake.

if its cold where you are I would do something warm.

Chili in some crock pots with several toppings
Spaghetti

Sorry it will be April in Michigan, so it's really a toss up. It could be rainy/cold or warm. I have no idea.

ETA: But we have access to a commercial kitchen (it's at a dinner theater)

I would just do some chili, hot dogs, maybe burgers. lots of toppings and then some veggies or pasta/potato salads

sloppy joe isn't a bad idea..we usually do that..or shredded chicken sandwiches or ham sandwiches..then sides we do potato or macaroni salad, baked beans, deviled eggs and cheesy potatoes (all pretty easy) and then veggie and fruit trays and like pretzels/chips and dips.
