Re-Lactating Advice!

posted 21st Feb
Gabe has had trouble latching since he was born. It was really stressful because he'd absolutely refuse for a while. And I mean, he'd get red in the face, shrieking, like my nipple was on fire near his face or something. It was really discouraging, so after 2 weeks of using a nipple shield, I stopped nursing him.
I read that babies usually learn to latch on pretty well by 4-6 weeks old (wish I would've just waited this long). But, he's now a month old. My breast still leaks a little milk if I squeeze it.
So, my question is, would it be possible to build up my supply again and try BFing again? If so, how? I need all the advice I can get :/

Call a lactation consultant/nurse at the hospital. They'll be able to help you. Your OB can perscribe stuff called Reglan or Domperidonme (sp). Also use Mothers Milk tea, Fenugreek, etc. from the health food stores. I work at a Sprouts and they have a whole section for nursing mamas.

I relactated! It is very possible! it is very hard to start again but don't get discouraged! I stopped when dd was 2 weeks and started again when she was roughly 5ish weeks. I started by pumping alllllll the time, even if nothing was coming out. Hand expressing will do wonders too. Hand express with the rhythm of the pump and you'll never do it any other way again, it really makes a huge difference in the amount that you produce. the more you can empty out, and the more often the more you will make and quicker! I took the maximum dosage of fenugreek and blessed thistle, along with eating steel cut oats! those helped a ton! do skin to skin whenever you get the chance, it really helps with getting them to latch.
