Tough love...

posted 10th Jun
Today Alannah, OKat and I went to McDonalds to have lunch. Alannah wouldnt stay close like she was told, and wouldnt listen. I gave her 2 strikes before we even got up to order. I ordered my food and went to ask her what she wanted and she took off (STRIKE 3), when I finally caught her she screamed you aint my mommy!!! I looked at her and said tough cookies, thats not what it says on your birth certificate.

So I grabbed my food and we left. All the way to the car she was throwing a fit that she wanted chicken nuggets. But after all that I wasnt going to reward her with McDonalds and I was still going to eat mine. So we got home and I put her in time out. After she calmed down Imade her a peanut butter sandwich and she started to scream and cry again. She pushed her food away so I sent her to bed for a nap.

My grandma said I was harsh, that I should have just spanked her and continued to have lunch. DO you think I was harsh for not letting her have McDonalds? We dont eat there very often so I think of it as a reward...not just getting lunch because we can very well have lunch I make at home. What would you have done?

I also do it at stores if the kids are acting up...we leave the cart and go home. I dont get what I need done but its better then them throwing a fit and being brats in the store

Not at all.. I think thats perfect.. Your daughter, you discipline how you think you should, everyones different. It's not easy dealing with a kid who acts like that.. So I'm impressed lol

Way to stand your ground, mama!

Most parents would have given in to make them be quiet. I agree about the reward thing. Not too harsh at all, IMO.

I think you did great...she'll really remember that! My child's grandparents are like that too; they always think every punishment is too harsh...even leaving chick-fil-la if he acts up and not letting him play in the play zone. I think it's their job to be too soft or something, even though they were not to us.

I commend(sp) you on the way you handled it! You did exactly what I plan on doing and what my mother did. You are giving her exactly what she needs. It's not tough love. I believe that parents who don't start disciplining their kids at an early age don't love their kids enough, then we end up with teenagers and young adults who believe they can get away with everything and they think everything is just handed to them, even more so if they pitch a fit! (I speak with experience, my nieces and nephew turned out just plain awful and disrespectful) and it's b/c my sister God love her and her husband have the parenting skills of a tree stump!
And don't put a lot of stock in what your grandmother said, I mean no disrespect, but my mom whoraised her own kids with the same tough love, tells my sister that she's to hard on her little boy, but thats a grandparents love. It's always a lil different. Congrat and keep up the hard work and consistancy!

Not harsh at all! I used to get spanked when I was bad, but then was able to still do whatever I wanted. My mom would tell me I couldn't play outside, but then it got to the point where I was like, "Come on, just spank me so I could go outside!!" I didn't view it as a punishment.

exactly....we take Alexander to restaurants. he's only 9 months but if he starts crying I will take him outside. he's usually really good and quiet but he has his moments. mcdonald's is a treat and shouldn't be given to toddlers or kids who are not behaving themselves. keep up the good work
