biting nipples?

posted 20th Feb
DS is 5 1/2 months old and is teething. None have come through yet but he likes to bite on toys and make a mad face. anyways he has been grabbing my breast lately and biting down on my nipple and will make the same mad face. Almost like he wants to rip my poor nipple off. How do i get him stop? we just went through a Bfing strike and finally have gotten back to normal.

When he does it, pull your boob away and say "No. We don't do that" and try not to smile or make any noises that could make it seem fun or like a game to him.

That angry face when he bites down probably isn't teething, my son did it for ages and it was from trapped wind (in the bowels)

You aren't denying him boob for hours, you simply take him off say OWWW loudly then put your boob away for a couple of minutes he will soon learn that biting the boob will result in the feed being interrupted. How far into the feed does he do it?

If you say it in a voice that isn't playing, kind of. With DS2, I would just pull him away and tell him "no, we don't do that" without smiling or anything (I wasn't being mean either) and then gave him the boob back. If he bit down on it again, I would do it again.

But if you make a loud noise and react to it (which I know is hard not to do) then he will start thinking it's a game or it's funny.

right at the begining. We will be laying in bed and he will grab my breast and try to pull it toward him. I take it as a sign that he is hungry but he will suck for a few seconds and then bite. I know he is getting milk by then and i dont think its to fast for him. ive never heard of trapped wind before, is it like a burp?

Saying no or yelling oww would just scare him, and I wouldn't personally want to do that if we just went through a nursing strike.

I've heard of people pulling them closer to the breast so their nose is against it and they have to pull back and release to breath (so they can't breath if they bite, and they aren't going to let themselves suffocate!)

Or if it's not too bad, you could just wait it out. My daughter does it for about a week at a time when she's teething really bad, but she doesn't bite down too hard so I just ignore it and she stops.

I have to ignore when my son goes through his phases like this too. I tried taking it away for a minute, telling him no, not smiling, all of that stuff...he laughed and kept doing it over and over. I gave everything a bit to see if it helped....it didnt
