re: slightly mortified

My son had cradle cap like you wouldn't believe. Like your DD, his hair is excessively thick so I didn't notice it until it was already really bad too. I used the Gentle Naturals and a regular fine toothed comb, washed his hair with the shampoo being very thorough with my fingers and then sat with a bowl of warm water with the comb, and very gently (while he was bath fresh) worked what i could loose with the comb. I sat with him on my lap, facing outwards, and went from his forehead back in a very gentle side to side motion. I kept dipping the comb in the water to A: keep the scalp wet and B: rinse the comb. It got a lot of it off, and it didn't come back.

My daughter had it to a lesser degree, but her hair was a little trickier because she is biracial. It's thick as crap, and when wet very curly and barely combable. But I did the same thing. Gentle naturals, comb, water, etc. It took a few treatments (I did it like once every four-ish days) for hers to go away and it didn't come back.

Everyone has their own methods though. This is just what worked for us. Good luck!

Not even gonna lie, it's a little expensive but it worked very well for us. They also sometimes have coupons if you get the Sunday papers and stuff. And you're welcome
