Hispanic baby names

posted 20th Feb
So, my 2 children's dad was Mexican, and my now-husband is also Mexican. My sons name is Simon Pedro, and my daughter is Cinthya Flor. My mom refuses to pronounce Simon the same way that everybody else does, which it's pronounced somewhat like "see-moan" in Spanish. It doesn't bother me a whole lot now that we live across the country from her.

Anyways, I'm pregnant and the names that my husband and I have chosen are these: Angel Rene for a boy, and Angelica for a girl.
I don't pick names because my mom likes them or pronounces them right, or because other people like them. My husband and I pick the names because they're the names that WE want to use for our child..right?

So, any one else have the problem of multi-cultural families and pronouncing names correctly or being judged by what you name your child? And how do you handle it? (moving across the country worked for me, but any other theories?)

Me too. I love the name Angel, and my middle name is Renee (which in Hispanic cultures is normally a boy's name) so that's how I decided on the name.

Yes,omg my MIL sucks at pronouncing names (she's Mexican too) when i was pregnant with my son DH and i decided on the name Preston and his family would always pronounce it like Pres-tone because of the O, it annoyed me so much and they knew it. So When he was born we decided to change the spelling of his name so we didnt have to deal with it

My grandpa was named Simon pronounced See-mon. That's how I've ever really known it. Its actually hard for me to say Simon lol.
My children are named Serena and Summer. People mispronounce my name more than theirs lol.

When I tell people I'm naming my son Joel they give me a funny look than say "oh that's cute." But I just say yup and don't really care what people think! I had picked Valencia for a girl but everyone hated that lol but its not their kid!

My family is from Sweden, so no one pronounces our kids named correctly lol. It doesn't bother me, if you name your child something cultural you are going to get comments.

So what did you change the spelling to?
Lots of people mispronounce my son's name, but at least they try. The issue with my mom annoys me because she refuses to try, and insists on calling him Simon, in English, which nobody else calls him that, because that's not how we pronounce his name at home.

Our Mexican family doesn't pronounce my daughters name the same as me either. In Spanish, there's no "th" sound, so it sounds like Cintya. It doesn't bother me because I know that it's hard to pronounce a name if you don't know how to make the sounds.

Where's "here"?? I know in Mexico they use simon that way, but it's also a name, just not a very common one I suppose.

we replaced the O with an E so Presten, it bothered me cause they knew how to pronounce it right and they know how to pronounce things right but they just dont want to, My DD's name is Juliette and MIL pronounces it Julietta it's annoying but im over it.
