I think the nurse is trying to get a payday. I think the hospital did her a favor by granting his request. Why would she want to help a racist anyway? Oh, right..she wants a payday plain and simple.

I think it would be different if he called her a racist name like the N word or slave or blackie or crack head etc. but he didn't. He also didn't cause a scene about it, if the hospital didn't call her to tell her what he wrote, she wouldn't have even know about it. Not right to sue the hospital over that and because Al Sharpton is in this she probably WILL win and get her payday

I think it is stupid. She is looking for an early retirement. She first has to prove that a black nurse wasn't assigned to that baby intentionally and the person she should be angry with is the idiot dad who wrote the letter. I have requested that certain nurses not be allowed in my room before. Not based on color because I don't care about that but, I saw an RN skipping and singing the smurfs theme song thru the ward with a CNA while I was walking after ask or surgery. Is that someone you want caring for you? Hardly!! I needed a nurse with a good disposition not one who acted like a child not paying attention where she was going.

Every time I try to explain this to anyone, they get on my ass. Which makes NO sense. If she would have had to deal with them, it could have been a lot worst then just avoiding there being a situation in the first place. I think the hospital did the right thing, it's what I would have wanted being the nurse. No point in trying to force those kinds of people into acceptance, because it won't happen. I've dealt with crap like that my whole life (because I'm Native), I've learned you can't change everyone and there's no point in trying, and I'll actively avoid being stuck in that sort of situation.

Why would people jump on you for that? Silly. I mean, if she likes to be verbally abused by all means send her to care for their baby.
I'm sure that would result in a hostile work environment lawsuit.

I think it's stupid that she sued.

Also the article is a little confusing. At first it said that no black nurses were allowed to care for the baby, then towards the end it said that the hospital told the dad that they could not grant his request.

I read it a few times and it looks like it said that the nurse is claiming they reassigned her the whole time, and the hospital is claiming that is false.

I think.

yeah they said in the article they reassigned her but at the end said they didn't allow his request, looks to me that the hospital is just back tracking because they are being sued.

I tend to agree. They protected her but told that asshat that it was not policy. Would she rather be verbally accosted or worse?

Ehh... the hospital's lawyer "eventually" told them it's illegal??
That note sets off all kinds of red flags (to me). I would think consulting with legal counsel would have been the first step before making any decisions regarding the father's request.

And I think the lawsuit is pretty ridiculous. I empathize with the nurse, but the hospital was only trying to protect her.

This!

If they saw her around their baby they probably would have berated her.

This may be a stupid question, but isn't it the same as me saying I don't want a male dr or nurse involved in checking my DD the time she had to get checked in her private area (she had a yeast infection so they had to look, it was quick but I request no males present at all).
