Orally or vaginally, whichever you're most comfortable with. I've always done orally. After the first 6 days draw your cover line 1/10th of a degree above the highest number during those 6 days, if you see a dip 2/10ths of a degree or more followed by your temp rising steadily for the next 3 days that's your thermal shift/ovulation. If it gets above your cover line and stays there for 3 consecutive days you're no longer fertile. If it stays above your cover line for 18 consecutive days there's a good change your pregnant. When you see it dip 2/10th of a degree or below your cover line at the end of your cycle AF will start soon. When AF starts, start over with a new chart. You can do all of this on paper, but it's honestly a lot simpler to use an app or a site like fertility friend. Then all you have to do is plug in your temp everyday and it does the rest of the work for you.
