ER? Please HELP!

posted 19th Feb
We are thinking about taking our 3 year old to convenient care tonight because he hasn't pooped in 8, going on 9 days. He says he feels like he has to go, but can't. He has large BM, as do I so I know how painful and hard it is to pass. We went to our regular doctor yesterday and he just said that he thinks he has a condition where his bowels don't contract right to squeeze the food into a comfortable enough width to poop out. He said it is genetic after I told him I have the same thing. He has been on Miralax for 4 days now and tomorrow morning will have been 5 days. Still nothing. I feel so bad for him. He barely wants to eat anything.

He's been drinking apple juice, been on Miralax, we've given him a suppository that just fell out because his BM is so close to coming out.....it's just too big. We've also put olive oil around the end of his anus to see if that would help his BM to come out easier. Nothing is working. He acts okay until he has the urge to poop. He just can't poop it out because it's too big. What will they do in the ER?

Is this worthy of taking him to Convenient Care or should we just wait? It's bedtime now so we might just put him to bed and see how he is tomorrow morning.

The only reason I'm taking him the Convenient Care over his doctor is because our family doctor is out of network and costs more than the $50 copay it costs to go to CC.

There is nothing they can do at urgent care and doesn't really call for an ER visit either. Did you ask about a stool softener instead of a laxative?

Have you tried prune juice?

Also I would try a warm bath and then putting him on the pot when he has to poop.

There's not much an ER can do. I also have this problem. It sucks. Time helps..so maybe putting him to bed after taking a stool softener and in the morning it might come out

I would not really go there because all they will do is say try a suppository or an enema. ( my daughter has bowel issues)

I would try an enema first. If that doesn't work I'd take him tomorrow.

I don't think it calls for a trip to the ER, but you may want to take him back to his regular doctor. only thing I can suggest is keep trying everything you've already tried. Hope he feels better, bless his heart!!!

This.
They use to give me suppositories. I have the same condition as does my brother. Poor guy. I use to go up to two weeks without a poop.

This will probably sound gross, but you may need to get some disposable gloves, some lubricant, and manually remove the impacted poop to make it easier for him to go. If there is poop right in his rectum, you can use a gloved and lubricated finger to gently swipe out pieces of the hard poop. Once you have removed what you can, give him a kids Fleets enema or liquid glycerine to get the rest of it moving. It may take a few times of having to help him along for him to be able to do it himself.

Try an enema, then (I know this will sound gross) but let him try to go IN the tub of warm water. it will help relax his muscles and lubricate him. Sounds gross, but it's something that can be cleaned.
