Online college?

posted 19th Feb
I'm home full time with DD, and until she's in full day kindergarten in 1.5 years, I can't go to college full time. SO I have been looking into online colleges. My local adult ed school (Where I got my GED a year ago) gave me a site that they said was legitimate, and I'm looking into different things I can do to get some pre-reqs out of the way, or even a certificate that can get me working pretty soon.

I'm interested in the medical profession mainly. I want to be a Midwife one day- but that is out of the question until DD is almost an adult (it's a 24/7 job, too hard to do for a single mom), BUT in order to be a midwife I'll have to be a Nurse as well- so eventually, nursing school WILL be necessary. But for now I'm looking into phlebotomy, CNA work, Medical assisting, Community health care worker- etc. Some of these can be done online I've heard. Anyways- if you have "attended" online college, and moved on to physical college after, what online colleges are legitimate with transferable credits? Which ones have good medical courses? Thank you!

A lot of community colleges now offer online courses. Those other school charge a lot and require loans.

If you want to eventually be a midwife your best bet would be to stick with nursing related/ CNA to LPN to RN. Or just go right for RN. I know you can get your RN online but I believe you have to be a LPN first. If finances are an issue you can always find a company that will train you to be a CNA then find one that will pay for you to get your LPN as a CNA and pay for you to get your RN as a LPN. There's always a catch with that though (working x amount of hours, pay for half, stay with the company for x amount of time). I know that didn't answer your question about online schools though :/ have you thought about being a doula?

if your goal is midwife.. you could start taking online generals.. just do it at a reputable college.. that's accredited so your classes will transfer. You'll do 2 years of generals full time.. so you could do them part time for now to get them out of the way.

don't bother with medical assisting.. it will not help you in nursing. CNA is not offered online.. it's mostly clinicals.

Well the thing is, I need a career RIGHT NOW to pay my bills with. I'd prefer it to be in the medical field, CNA- etc. What I was planning on doing was getting a certificate of some sort, so I can get a job, and while I'm working, go to college for nursing on the side. I was told by a few colleges I spoke to that the CNA thing won't make any different whatsoever in me getting into nursing school- they obviously don't count the experience you get from it- but for me personally, it might be good to get some experience on my own end. My mom and gram are already CNAs so they could help me.

I'm going to UoP right now. The down fall, they are expensive but I got everything covered with loans (thankfully...until i have to pay them back lol).

I REALLY like the way their online is set up. It's easy to get your work done, answer your course questions, so on. It works like BG with threading. My husband also goes to UoP.

My local community college has some courses that might work as pre reqs, but I don't know how to go about any of this...what classes to sign up for- etc...I'm completely confused, I feel like an idiot haha. I've written to the school, so I'm hoping they get back to me about it soon.

A lot of places will train you to be a CNA for free. It's like on the job training. Maybe start there? It doesn't have any pull on getting into nursing school but it wouldn't hurt to have that experience. When I was in nursing school I always tried to study with someone who was a CNA because they always seemed to know what was going on. I personally think they make better nurses too.

um, it certainly does. It helps you learn how to communicate with patients. IT may not help you get INTO nursing school, but it will help you as a nursing student, and as a nurse. plus.. it's not much school. doesn't pay great, but you learn a LOT while a CNA.

you talk to an advisor... they tell you. Most colleges have online classes now. I went through University of South Dakota, got my RN online. (though you obviously have clinicals that cannot be done online)

you have to be VERY organized, and disciplined to do online school. Essentially.. you're teaching yourself.
