Surrendering an animal/Humane Society

posted 19th Feb
Have you ever surrendered an animal to the humane society? Did you try to keep up with your former pet until they were rehomed? Were they euthanized? How was the experience?

I don't want your b.s. opinions, none of that. I don't care about how you FEEL about the humane society, I want to hear from people who have done this.

TIA.

Yes. Our cat needed surgery on her liver and special food. We couldn't do either.

Here they don't let you "keep up with them". We did get told however she had surgery and was rehomed to an old couple.

She was probably in a much better home with them anyway. I didn't have much time for her with a newborn.

We also surrendered our dog who would not stop getting out. He was rehomed to a family with three kids who lived on the beach. Once again, probably a lot better there then he had it with me

We had to take one of our dogs, well she was a puppy, to the shelter right after 1st son was born. We live in the country and she was chasing cows and killing chickens. It was take her to the shelter or someone was going to shoot her. They told husband that they could not guarentee she will go up for adoption. If the dog is vaccinated already and spayed/neutered it does up thier chance of going up for adoption. You could also look into different resue groups in your area and see if they could take the dog. You could also pay the adoption fee ahead of time for your dog that way he or she will be vetted and be adoptable as long as it has no behavior issues.

They don't let you keep up with the animal. They won't tell you anything after you sign the papers.

I assume that she was put down. She had some health issues. I have no illusions that she was rehomed

But it iwas still the best decision I could have made

I have not, however they charge to surrender here. I think dogs are $75 and cats are $150 from what I remember. This was years ago though.

My mother brought my childhood dog there she was about 11 or 12 and still acted like a puppy and they put her down.
When my mother told me what happened I was very upset, because we could have brought her to a rescue that would have got her a home fersure.

Working there half the time they don't put all the dogs out to be seen to even get a chance to get adopted.

Oh man. I'll be kinda sad if I don't know what the outcome is

If he's healthy, but not vaxxed or neutered yet, do you think they'll euthanize him? I mean, even if nothing is wrong? I know they vaccinate the animals pretty soon after surrendering them, at least here. But I'm not sure about neutering. I'll have to call and check.

Idk about all shelters or humane societies, but my cat, Nina, was not vacced or spayed when I adopted her. So they don't just automatically put down animals like that.

That's good to hear. I know they vax them at this one right away, not sure about neutering. I love our kitty. I really want to find him a new home but I mean, I'd rather keep him here than like, abandon him or take him somewhere only to have him be put to sleep

At the one here they don't put the animals down. Unless its mean or very sick. I've even taken my rabbits there. They won't tell you anything but you can always go up there every now and then and look. That's what we did with our rabbits.

That's what I was thinking. And yeah, this one also has a potbelly pig right now, and some parrots   And I know that they don't euthanize to make more room or anything. Only if there's a real issue. I'm just worried.

We actually have an amazing humane society here. I recently had to give up my chihuahua because it didn't get along with my LO. They took her in, got her shots since she didn't have them, got her chipped and neutered. They have a facebook page where I am able to see her progress and they are a complete non-euthanizing shelter.

You could look online to see if there are any no-kill shelters in your area.,
