Natural Methods

posted 19th Feb
I'm due ın 3-6 weeks time (1st April due date) with my 3rd baby and I would like some tips and advice from any ladies who achieved a natural birth. I had gas and air with my first 2 children and no epidural but I felt I relied on the gas and air alot (I actually fell asleep). Unfortunatly, seeing as I am not giving birth in my home country, I have recently discovered that the hospital I am attending offers either an epidural or totally 100% natural and gas and air is not available. I'm really not keen on the whole needle in the spine scenario, it's actually quite a scary thing for me to understand the concept of being numb and having no control or feeling. Any advice on how on earth I'm going to get through this? I have a history of rather speedy births so atleast I can take that into consideration aswell

I had a completely natural child birth. No pain meds or anything.
I'd highly suggest using the jacuzzi tub if your hospital has one available. The jets and warm water helped so much through contractions. Also having my husband and midwife massage my muscles during contractions helped too.

Labors painful no matter what but it's mind over matter
Just go into it confident knowing you can do it!

& Remember pushing a baby out while laying on your back is like taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back try other positions until you find one that's comfortable for you.

Honestly, I would have to say mind control. You have to keep telling yourself that you are almost there and that you can do it. I can say from experience, I had planned on a water birth, couldn't because I was induced. I labored for two hours after my water broke, and finally broke down and gave the "safety word" to my mom to get the anesthesiologist. The nurse did not check me because I was 4 cm 30 minutes before that. Ten minutes later I was sitting up on the side of the bed, trying to lean over, crying because I couldn't. He finally got the line in and told the nurse to check me immediately, I was crowning. They had to stop my epidural, which resulted in me having feeling on one side, and about 30% on the other. I pushed "crooked", for 50 minutes. I have convinced myself for having such fast labors, it is not worth the pain and risks of the epidural itself, and the prolonged pushing. If you can do it with just gas the first two times, you can do it without anything this time!

Wow! That's the exact sort of thing I don't think I'd be able to deal with, it petrifies me. I'm hoping and praying this baby decides to just casually walk out the womb as fast as possible lol

I am also due in a couple weeks, with my 3rd as well! My first two were totally natural births, no epidural. They went rather quickly, 5 hours and 2 hours, so that helps.
I agree with what everyone else said in the thread so far, "mind over matter." A woman's body is meant to give birth, so just telling yourself, "I can do this!" helps. I've heard that epidurals can make labors last longer (not sure how true this is, you might want to look it up), so that was one of the reasons I didn't want one.
Also, a Jacuzzi is really nice if the hospital has one. It helped me during my first time labor.
