Delayed cord clamping

posted 19th Feb
If you are having/had your LO in a hospital and decided that you'd prefer to delay the cord from being clamped right away, did you just tell your doctor? or did you ask? how did they respond?

I dont have another regular check up until March 11th and it's with the APRN of the practice and not a doctor, so I'm going to ask, just curious of other women's experiences!

I put it in my birth plan with the hospital and told my doctor numerous times.

I asked, but it didn't end up happening. The doctor was receptive to it, but my son was born really fast and had to be taken away swiftly because he wasn't making a sound. They said it's common for babies that are born so fast to be "stunned" and need a little extra help.

Anyways, just ask

You'd wanna tell them before you have the baby obviously. They probably won't ask unless it's a widwofe or a very crunchy dr. Nobody ever asked me with dd1. I didn't even know they could do that. And dd2 had to have her cord blood squeezed back inside of her and clamped immediately to avoid death so I didn't really have an option with her.

I've never heard of this. Curious, why delay the cord clamp?

This is the best way i've seen the information behind delayed cord clamping.

Basically, half of a baby's blood supply is still in the placenta if the cord is clamped right away.

It's common practice at the hospital I delivered at.

I wasn't aware of how beneficial delayed clamping is when my daughter was born, and she had to be taken over to the warmer right away anyway because she was swimming around in meconium and needed to be suctioned as to not aspirate.

My doctors are absolutely fantastic, but I do remember them not being 100% supportive of a written/signed birth plan because things can obviously change quickly. I'll be sure to ask again though.

Thats my goal this time. How long did it take to stop pulsing?

Thats wonderful that she doesn't mess with the cord or anything for a while. We're not in a position to have a home birth, and my husband isn't 100% in love with the idea of one anyway. Maybe next time if I can make it through this birth without medication.

Yeah we didn't get skin to skin right away with my daughter because she had to be suctioned, hoping for some different things for this birth!
