if you cloth diaper in a hot climate

posted 19th Feb
Do you have any problems?

I live in AZ, summer temps can easily hit 112° on the regular. All of my stash are so soft and fuzzy inside, i'm kind of worried about them giving her a heat rash   am I being silly?

I don't CD in AZ but I've spent a lot of time there and know the climate. Rashes usually come from moisture and heat combined, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. Besides, I don't think you'd be anywhere very long with a newborn in the heat. Even in the time it takes a car to cool down after starting or going in and out of doors shouldn't be enough to irritate the skin. Get as close to 100% cotton as you can in the diapers and clothing and your LO should be fine!

She's due in April so she'll be 6 or 7 months before it starts to cool down and a little over a year when it heats up again, and we like to be pretty active even during summer, so she'll be in the heat a lot. And even then, I can't keep the a/c cranked all the time, so even if it's not HOT in the house, it's definitely warm. I was just thinking...most of the insides feel like a nice blanket and I wouldn't want that anywhere near my body for most of the year!

Maybe I'll have to look for cotton inserts that seem more lightweight and just devide my stash into summer & winter. The bamboo inserts seem like they'd be pretty tolerable too.

Cloth diapers are more breathable then sposies

We live in a hot climate - reaches 43 degrees during summer here (Australia) and i've had no issues.

Fitteds are great, even hybrid fitteds if you want extra breathability because they dont have PUL in them.

as strange as it sounds, wool covers can be very good in hot weather, as they breathe really well, so heat rash is not such a problem, granted you'd probably want to skip the longies.

Shows the breathability of a cloth diaper VS disposable

Will put you at ease if you ever watch it, your bubs bottom will be fine.

I had my son in cloth over summer and he didnt get a rash once  .. and i used fleece liners the entire time too.
