Question about Group B?

What exactly is Group B, & how do you get it?

I'm not exactly sure what it is, but you can't stop it from happening. My doctor told me a lot of women have it at some point in their life. I had it, my baby is just fine! They just gave me antibiotics when I was in labor.

it's strep bacteria (strep throat is Group A). For some women, it can be normal vaginal bacteria.

I had it earlier in pregnancy, & they told me if I didn't have antibiotics for it the baby would be born with all these problems. Well they only gave me one prescription of antibiotics, & none since then.

It's normal flora in the intestinal tract and can spread to the vagina during pregancy (or any time, really).

They usually only check you for it later in pregnancy (36ish weeks). They give you the antibiotics for it while you're in labor. Not when you're pregnant.

That isn't true. Not all babies get it. & not all people choose to get the antibiotics. I know there are other things you could do, Idk what they are though. They generally just give you the antibiotics while you're in labour in the hospital.

The chances of your baby actually getting sick because of strep b are like... slim to none.

You don't have to take antibiotics your entire pregnancy. If you took the prescription as directed, it should have cleared up.

That's why I was wondering. Bc they said I needed to take that while I was pregnant, or it would hurt the baby. They said I would get the medicine while I was in labor too, but I thought they would treat it throughout your whole pregnancy since you can't get rid of it.

I'm not an expert but I don't think they treat it during pregnancy. Just in labour. & you technically aren't required to even get the antibiotics. It's your choice (I JUST talked to my midwife about this today at our appt lol).

The bacteria doesn't become a problem until the baby passes through the birth canal during labor, and like I said, it's unusual for a baby to become sick from it. You don't really need to take antibiotics while you're pregnant, IMO.

When they told me about it, bc they didn't say anything else about it.

that doesn't surprise me, sadly. lol a lot of nurses are so dumb  

it is honestly not very common that a baby gets sick from it & gets all these problems.

I had it with my son and didn't have antibiotics. He's perfectly healthy.
