Any crib mattress is fine, they are made to be safe and firm enough for an infant to sleep on. Just make sure any crib sheets are held snugly/tightly to the bed.

look into the angelcare monitor. They will detect if your child has stopped breathing. Along with room temp.

not dumb, it took us a while also. What you do with the mat part is stick it on 1/4inch piece of wood to keep it from picking up other random vibrations. and it goes under the mattress. I have no clue how it picks up if they aren't breathing up it does! Bc if I pick my son up and forget to shut the switch off on his monitor it will start beeping, which it will do if they stop breathing to scare them. The only pain is having to shut off my part before I go into his room and remembering to shut his part off also. But other wise I love it! It's also a nightlight on his part also.

the mat goes under the mattress, his monitor is the one with the ring on the top, I actually keep it in the very corner of his crib where he can't get it, and then yours will have the screen. The ones that have 2 monitors with a screen are good if you keep one in your room and one like in your livingroom for naps and stuff like that. We just use the one, and use it only at night. During the day I use the cheap monitor we purchased first and have my part in the living room.

the movement plate goes under the mattress (its super senstive). I cannot even believe how well it worked. And yes the other part would go on a nightable near the crib or something..and the other part stays with you.
