Out of control...

This is getting ridiculous. I am so tired of hearing these stories of police who think they're above the law. It's been all over the country. It's happened a lot recently here too. But this, this takes the cake. I'm not going to be surprised when people start taking things in their own hands...
FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office says the death of a mentally disabled man in police custody has been ruled a homicide.
Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said Friday that the state medical examiner determined that 26-year-old Robert Saylor of New Market died of asphyxia Jan. 12.
Saylor had Down syndrome.
Bailey says he died after resisting arrest by three deputies at a Frederick movie theater. An employee had called police because Saylor wouldn’t leave his seat after a movie.
Bailey says Saylor cursed at the deputies. She says he became medically distressed while they were escorting him in handcuffs from the theater.
Bailey says the evidence will be given to the state’s attorney’s office for review after the investigation is complete.
Meanwhile, all three deputies remain on regular duty.

seriously it's like you can get away with anything.
still in active duty too.. nice!
there is a cop in my area that was charged with downloading child pornography and luring a child.
So of course it had to go to trial which took 2 years. So he was suspended for 2 years with full pay
WTF!!! and eventually found guilty. Ridiculous

I saw that on Facebook he just wanted to see the movie again... :-\

So HE refused to leave the theater, and then resisted the police officers, and because he became medically distressed while in custody, the police think they are above the law?

I'm failing to see where these officers actually were proven to have done anything wrong? I mean, yeah it looks suspicious but we have NO IDEA what happened or who was involved. I can honestly say that after working in mental health myself, I can seriously see how accidents happen, mistakes are made and things get out of hand. The mentally handicapped people are often some of the scariest to be around when they get out of control- seriously

So why not just get up and not say smurf to the police. Apparently after a movie...you leave. Its sad he has the DS but..come on.

Yea it's crazy!
There's a big scandal here. Look up Bisard Indianapolis. He hit some motorcyclists and killed one and injured two. They took his blood and said he was drunk but the court through it out because of who took it! She was certified to do it. They had a second vial and the police were messing with it to get it thrown out. They just had a change of venue. It's crazy.
Then there was another who was pulling people over and robbing them. The news blocked out his pic per police orders then finally showed it after enough people complained.

I know. If they had any compassion and a clue, they would have just bought him another ticket.

I don't think they should have done that. The guy shouldn't be given special treatment just because he had DS.

His comprehension level probably isn't the same as an average adult. I have worked with DS adults for almost 9 years and I could see that being really traumatizing for him.
Everyone is different but he probably had the idea in his head that the movie would come back on and probably felt really scared when a bunch of police had to tell him it wasn't and remove him by force

In general, yes.
Did you even read it? They weren't even on duty. Clearly he was mentally handicapped. They should have let people who were trained to deal with him do it. They killed him and are still working! They'll likely get away with it, which makes them above the law.

You clearly do not have experience with those with special needs. It's not so simple.

Hmmm I see both sides.
Do we allowed people with special needs to be above the rules because of their differences? If he wasn't special needs would we still feel so bad for him?
Was EMS called? What does medically disstress mean? Did he fight back?

Were they obligated to? No. But it would have been the right thing to do.
And yes, that is why there are procedures to follow when dealing with someone with special needs. They're a protected class.
