Gestational Diabetes... Testing ME? (Reposted CORRECTLY) :)

posted 18th Feb
I am currently 28 weeks pregnant with Baby #1. To sum things up, at my first routine ultrasound, the baby was positioned in a way that half of his body was in shadows and the ultrasound technician could not see one of his kidneys clearly or measure it correctly.
So my OBGYN decided to send me to a Specialist to get a more in depth ultrasound to check to babies organs.
At that ultrasound (sometime around my 20th week) everything came out perfect. Baby was developing perfectly, and was measuring a few days ahead of his due date.

Well, even though I passed the Specialist's ultrasound with flying colors, they decided to keep me coming back in for checkups to make sure things are developing accordingly, which I understand. After all, better to be safe than sorry, right?

So today was my 8 week checkup with the specialist. And in between my 1st visit with the specialist and the one today, I found out that I tested positive for Gestational Diabetes.

The ultrasound technician specialist performed the ultrasound to check to make sure that the baby was developing good (everything looked great). Baby measures at 3 lbs 1 oz, 14 inches, and is measuring a week ahead of his due date.

I asked the tech if he is measuring ahead because of my Gestational Diabetes and she said no, that he is growing perfectly and is just advanced in his growing.

When the doctor (NOT my OBGYN) came in after the ultrasound, he basically set out the plan for me. Even though things look "completely normal and perfect" according to the U/S tech, I have to do a 24 hour urine thing where I take all my urine and put it in a refrigerated jug then turn it in to the hospital.

This specialist doctor also is having me come back in a week to check the baby's heart (even though at this ultrasound NO problem was detected with his heart, it looked GREAT and was a strong heart beat at 155 bpm), and the doctor said they'd probably see me every week following too.

And what I'm dumbfounded about the most is that they are sending ME for testing. Yes, ME. They are sending me for an ultrasound of MY heart and kidneys.

I have never heard of this being done in a women before with Gestational Diabetes.

Overall, I have been really good at managing my GD and know my limits on what I can and cannot eat. My blood sugar never spikes unless I eat WAY too much sugar to the point where it makes me nauseous (just as the glucose test did).

So I just feel that it's very unfair that this doctor seemed to give me a hard time about my baby being on the bigger side and practically putting the blame on me and my diet. I have read before where a lot of women have no control over developing GD, regardless of their diet.

All of these tests, I've never heard of being done. So if you have/had gestational diabetes or have had these tests done, I'd love to hear what was done with you and your experiences!!!

I had GD and was diagnosed with heart problems when ds was a week old. Maybe there's a connection but I'm not sure. I also had to go in every week since I was considered hifh risk but aftter a month of normal testing they put me back on a regular dr schedule
