Diagnosed With Cancer

posted 18th Feb
For the ones of you who don't know, Saturday I was diagnosed with cancer. I had been puking up blood non-stop and having extreme abdominal pains all day, so I went to the emergency room. They did a blood test, gave me a shot to stop the pain, asked me a bunch of questions, and did an ultrasound on my stomach because they had thought something had punctured my stomach or intestines. Everything looked okay except an area on the lower part of my stomach. The ultrasound technician called the doctor in immediately and asked him if the area looked cancerous to him, and he confirmed that it did, indeed, appear to be gastric cancer. The doctor called the CTCA (Cancer Treatment Center of America), and set me up an appointment with them on February 20th. The doctor then told me that I had a 57% chance of surviving the cancer, but the odds didn't seem to be in my favour due to my young age. I was sent home a couple of hours later with the knowledge that I was currently dying. I was in shock, upset, mad, and I didn't know what I was going to do. The next day, Sunday, I got a call from CTCA saying that I need to be down there the following morning by 10am, that they had received my blood work results, and they needed to see me ASAP. This morning, I woke up, and away we went.. We got there around 9:45am and only had to wait about 30 minutes before they set me up in a room. They went over the information they had received from my doctor, asked me about my symptoms, and told me about the tests they needed to perform before they could officially confirm that it was gastric cancer and to find out what type it is and what stage I am at. I agreed to having the tests done which consisted of an endoscopic ultrasound and a PET-CT scan. I got both tests done at 1pm, and they confirmed that it was Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer after they had went over the test results and asked me a few questions concerning my family's history with cancer. They gave me three options- schedule to have a partial gastrectomy done which may or may not need following chemoradiation, do chemoradiation for a few months and see if that works, or let the cancer run its course. Of course, I chose the most effective option- the partial gastrectomy. A partial gastrectomy is where they go in and remove the part of the stomach that is infected, for the ones of you who didn't know. I'm scheduled to have that done March 4th, and I'll be hospitalized approx. a few days up to a week.

Anyways, I'm just thankful that they figured out what it was and helped me to schedule the treatment so soon! This explains why I've been feeling so lousy the past few months and why I've been losing so much weight. Please pray that everything continues going smoothly and that the surgery goes as planned.. I'm quite nervous about it.

Oh no. This gave me the chills. You are too young to have to deal with something like this. I had cervical cancer but it wasn't life threatening. I am SO sorry. *hugs*. I am hoping you will be ok. Did they say what your chances are after this surgery?

75% chance that I'll be okay and cancer free after the surgery, but there's always that risk of infection and the cancer spreading or them not being able to remove all of it.
