Hair dye help?

I want my hair this red.

Is it possible to achieve that at home? What kind of dye should I use? How light should I lighten my hair to? Right now it's dark brown and gold. ( faded from red to gold)

Google "Twilla Jean" she has her hair that red and gives tips in her vintage blog on what to use and how to maintain to color.

You can do it at home, I have. But be prepared your hair is going to be DAMAGED pretty bad. The only way to get that color is bleaching it. It has to be all one color of blonde, even an orange color will do. But bleach is the only option. I have used the sallys dye that is for dark hair, it actually only took to my roots and left the rest of my hair dark. Bleach was my only option.
This is with bleaching to a light orange.

Just be careful if you're not experienced in doing different colors like that. My hair is dark brown and we did mine at home using products from sally's. I'd suggest going there or somewhere like it.. usually the girls in there are really good at helping you out with everything too. We had to bleach mine first which KILLS your hair then dye it (mine was pink). Actually we tried purple first and it looked gray so we did pink over it.
I'm sure the red will last longer than pink but when you put a color that isn't 'natural' in your hair it usually fades pretty quick. With washing every day my pink only lasted about a month.. maybe a little longer then I ended up dying it back dark. All in all I LOVED the pink but I KILLED my hair so be careful!

Also, if you go to a beauty store ask for a really good conditioning for after you bleach/dye.

Ya, If my hair was virgin it would take those good. Ive been dying it since I was like 13 I have a smurf ton of gray hair and Im only 27! lol Bleaching did so much damage to my hair...This is the first time is probably 5yrs that my hair is a 'normal' color only cause Im to lazy now that Im pregnant to keep up with the colors.

My hair was really dark brown and now it's that color. Get a 40 volume developer with a purple bleach from Sally's and lighten it with that, then get a bright red and put on it. Get some shampoo for colored hair and put a little bit of red semi permanent dye in your conditioner and that will help keep the color because that red fades super fast!

Red faedes just as quick, any color Ive noticed fades super quick. The only color Ive every had that I could NOT get out was teal. That sucker stayed forever!! lol

But OP I agree, condition condition!!

I only dye my hair about once every three months or so and it always turns out the same. I also make sure I use Aussie Three minute Miracle once a week to once every two weeks. When I got my hair done before my fiance came home in july the stylist couldn't believe ho little damage I had. And this was the day after I dyed it.

YES I forgot we put teal on tips of my hair when we did the pink & it would NOT come out!! I dyed it dark dark brown & the teal even came through that within a few days/a week!

I used this about a week ago, also. Worked really well!

ETA: The ends of my hair have been bleached/dyed tons. it's starting to fade from those areas. :/

When I first started trying to dye mine bright red, I tried that same brand and that didn't work for me. It just turned it burgundy-ish.
