Question for dog owners!! (Labs)

posted 18th Feb
SO and I just moved into our new house together. We were looking at getting a good family dog. We don't have a big yard and the dog would be inside almost all of the time. We found a Labrador retriever for adoption that's 8 months old, and he's beautiful! My question is....when do labs stop growing??? "Buddy" is only 8 months old and is already pushing 70lbs!! I seen somewhere that they usually don't go over 75/ 80..... Can anyone confirm? TIA

Why would you want a dog that would be stuck inside all of the time? Difs typically grow til 2-3 yrs old.

Were we live, we don't have a lot of room for him outside, and while we are at work, he will probably be in a crate

Why would you get a big dog if you don't have the room for a big dog? He'll require a lot of walking so if you don't have a yard you'll have to go for actual walks... and how long will you be away at work? 8+ hours? That's too long to leave a dog in a crate, they need to go out to potty. Do you have anyone who can come to the house to let it out? If not, I'd suggest getting a smaller dog or waiting until things are more ideal for a dog...

Labs are great dogs for children. Both of mine were bout 85 lbs. But they both also had parvo which stunted the growth. They are very mellow and don't mind the inside. I know sum breeds if you leave them inside they get hyper but ours could stay in for eight to ten hrs and not care as long as you give them love they will love you.

Labs need a yard to run around in. Why get him if you're only going to stick him in a crate? Why is he going to be an inside dog when you do have a yard for him to run around in?
My dog is half lab half pit-bull, just turned a year old. Around 75 lbs and still growing, labs are very energetic(sp).

I am sure he will get bigger. If you do decide to get him. I would say you will need to make sure you go on walks very often to help him get out his energy if he is going to be crated. He is still young and will be very energetic especially if he is in a kennel all day. Our dogs are crated during the day and we have to do walks and then even some more play time later in the day just to be able to get them to settle down at night and they are both ACD's which are a very hyper breed like labs.

I only work 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. And I'm not just going to "stick him in a crate". He will be crate trained for when we are not going to be home....because I would prefer my smurf not get ate up. All of DD sitters come to my house to watch DD while SO and I are at work, so yes, there will be someone there to let him outside. Also, SO only works 3-4 days a week so he will be home on the days that the sitters arent

I plan on walking him daily. We live in a nice neighborhood, and there are always people walking there dogs, I planned on getting a walking buddy

Labs need ALOT of room to run around. My in-laws have 2 labs. They do not stay inside all day but are left outside. (they live on a farm) It isn't fair to get a dog that will spend half of its life in a crate? Labs are hyper dogs and need a good amount of training to help them settle down and listen well. Which can take months do. (depending on the dog of course) I think a small dog would be better for you. One that stays under 20 lbs. They can handle the no back yard and walks better then a lab can. (or at lease some small dogs)

I said I don't have a lot of yard space. Plus its not fenced in, I wouldn't let him run a muck into other peoples yards.

I wish I had a walking buddy but we live in the sticks and our dogs barely get along with eachother lately I don't know how they would do with other dogs in their presence :-/ I think if you give the dog the time and care it needs then he will do fine. Just make sure you take him out when you need to and give him pleny of attention. Our dogs are crate trained and I would not have it any other way. They both do fine and days when we are home our dog still goes in her crate on her own becuase it is her safe place and she has never once thought it was a bad place to be.

Well of course not.. I wouldn't assume you would. Just letting you know because I know how annoying labs are when it comes to cretin things. We are only giving you advice you ask for.

I understand that, but just because I'm willing to crate train my dog, everyone assumes that its going to spend all day, everyday in a kennel and it will never go outside to run/ walk. Which is very untrue. People are in my house 24/7. But I also have enough respect for my babysitters to not let my dog run wild through out the house while they are caring for my child. I would very much appreciate them letting the dog outside, but would understand if they didn't want to be jumped on, or ran down
