Stress and missed period

posted 18th Feb
Ive heard stress can mess with your period, but Could it cause you to be like 2 weeks late? I don't think I'm pregnant because with my last pregnancy I had hyperemesis and I had so many super strong symptoms extremely early on, and right now I just have a late period and heartburn. But I also have heartburn sometimes when I'm stressed. I am going to get a dollar store test on my way home from picking SO up, but until then, I just wanted to see if anyone thought if just stress could cause it to be THAT late..

No. It's a common misconception. Because after you ovulate, it's always a set number of days till you start. I remember reading that article in cosmo when I was two weeks late, which I had assumed was due to stress, but nope I was 6 weeks pregnant. Good luck.

If you're saying that stress cannot delay menstruation, that's false, because it can.

Can it cause it to be really late though? Or would it just make it a few days late?

It cause my cycle to go to smurf. I didn't get it for weeks, so I keept thinking I was pregnant. Then I got it, but it would come at very irregular intervals.

It depends. Normal, every day stress wouldn't make your period 2 weeks late. You'd have to be really, really stressed. Have you experienced any recent weight loss or change in the people you spend time with?

This. It doesn't delay menstruation after ovulation, but it definitely can delay ovulation. Two weeks is possible, OP. But also every pregnancy is different, so just because you don't feel like you did last pregnancy doesn't mean you're not pregnant. Guess you'll know one way or the other soon enough.

No weight loss & no change in the people I'm around, but I have been under a ton of stress.. But the stress didn't start till a couple days after my period was due. I'm honna go look at my cycle because I've been keeping track of it to avoid pregnancy so I'm honna go make sure we didn't have sex when I was ovulating.

Yeah, if the stress didn't start till after your period was due, then the stress has nothing to do with it.

Well smurf, that would really suck.
I'm not really good at this whole cycle tracking thing yet, so I'll post it and maybe someone can help. But I think I'm not as late as I originally thought. I think I'm only about a week late.

(btw, didn't have mirena removed to TTC, had it removed for other reasons. We have been using condoms & diaphragm w/spermicide

October 16th
•Mirena removed

November 5th
•Ovulation cramping (right side)

December 2nd
•Started period

December 6th
•Period stopped

December 17th
•Ovulation cramp (right side)

January 7th
•Started period

January 12th
•Period stopped

January 19th
•Ovulation cramp (right side)

And we had sex jan. 18th but used A condom.

This is not tracking to prevent pregnancy. "Ovulation" cramping is not a reliable method of determining when you ovulate. From what you have here, when you think you ovulate can't possibly be when you actually ovulated, because your period started way too long afterwards. Luteal phases are generally between 10-16 days long, not three weeks or a month! Often they can be shorter, mine was only 7 days, but not longer. And your luteal phase will only ever vary by a day or two from cycle to cycle.
You need to read Taking Charge of Your Fertility. The only reliable way of knowing when you ovulate is to track cervical mucus and basal body temperature, and confirm it with cervical position.
So at this point, you have no way of knowing if or when you ovulated. Maybe you're pregnant, maybe you're not, who knows? It could still be the Mirena aftereffects.

Hate to tell you this but ovulation tests can also double as a pregnancy test... It's probably accurate, especially if you're taking it late in your cycle.
