Tax question

posted 18th Feb
SO and I can't agree on what is right for our taxes. He thinks his mom is right about him making more by claiming our DD.

He made a lot more than me because I couldn't work through my pregnancy due to bed rest and complications. So if we're both single, and he made more who claims her? I've heard the one making less gets more back.

We did the tax calculator but it's unable to do mine yet, cause I haven't got my W2. (I will be later though). His said he'd get almost $3,800 back, and for the year he made a little less than $7,500. We're estimating I made $1,000 or less because I wasn't paid minimum wage plus only worked a few months.

I'm just really confused because his mom was telling me I'm not allowed to claim DD and rolled her eyes when I said I wanted to find out who'd make more before she just does SO's taxes for him without telling us.

I have an accountant and he runs it different ways for me. My parents claimed my son the first two years and just gave me the money.

The child credit is 1,000 so it doesnt matter who claims her.

Are you married to her dad? Whoever has the baby the most out of year gets to claim her. Tell her to shut up.. jeez.

My husband and I are filing separately, because we get screwed if we file jointly. We both work full-time. He didn't get enough taxes taken out of his checks, so I'm letting him claim our daughter. I will get less back, but at least he won't have to pay. Your husband only made $7500 last year? How do you survive?

Well if you lived together the whole year then yes technically because he made more he has the right to claim her. But I'm telling you from experience that my SO made more then I did and he got back more money then I did and we each claimed 1 child.

Oh, and I have her mostly, we live separately and she stays with me. So then I have to claim her? Or can he still?

I was just seriously wondering the same thing. $7,500 for an entire year?

Well who ever made more will get more of the credit but I don't think they will be getting the full 1k. I made 9k last year and only got 900 out of the 1,000.

Maybe I should have her claim DD then.

And how does one get back $3800 when they only made $7500 the whole year? (even minus the $1000)

He can claim her, but don't let his mom tell you otherwise, you had her most, then technically you should claim her. If you think he'll give you the money from it, go for it.

I'd get back over $15k! That would be nice..... I'm sure we'll get back less than $4k but I'm still waiting on one of my 1099 forms from a previous employer
