illegal homeschool

posted 18th Feb
In my state you have to register with the state to homeschool. You also have to have a high school diploma or GED to homeschool and you have to administer state approved tests so the state knows the child is getting the proper education.

I am wonder what the negative repercussions of a child being illegally homeschooled? The person teaching the child does not have their high school diploma or GED and is not registered with the state. This child also is on Xbox most of the day. I mean as far as education is concerned im pretty sure this kid is not doing any sort of school work and he manipulated everyone to get out of going to school.

Yes I know this person and they have even told me they are illegally homeschooling. This kid is also friends with DH and we see his name pop up as early as 9 am and he is online all day.

I really wish that was a requirement in my state (the mandated tests), because my siblings and I were home-schooled and we all suffered academically (not to mention socially).

After reading the requirements I am pretty sure my mom illegally homeschooled me and my siblings. We never took tests. You are also required to join a homeschooling support group so the children can get the socialization other kids have or get help when it is needed. So glad I decided to go back and finish high school, otherwise I would have had to get my GED because we were not legally home schooled. I didn't even know you could get an actual diploma from home schooling.

My mom was a control freak and she didn't want us to be around other people even stopped us from going to church for no reason.

The parents will be severed and can face jail time and massive fines. The child will also have to start over, like if they are in 7th grade but only test into 5th.

I had to get my GED. My mom tried to print me a diploma off the computer (even though I never did any high school coursework) and the college laughed in my face when I applied. I felt so stupid.

From what I could see. The parents could be brought up on truancy charges.

There is no parent teaching this kid. His sister is but she does not have a GED. She is supposed to be working towards it but she doesn't have it.

This kid was supposedly being bullied horribly and no one would do anything about it, that is why his mom chose to illegally have him homeschooled.

Then depending on your state truancy laws it's either jail or fines for the parent. That's really sad she is screwing her child out of an education.

It really is sad. I feel bad for the kid if he really was bullied but there are legal ways to get him the education he deserves. All kids deserve a proper education and he is not getting one.

When I was in high school, my best friends mom did this for my friends brother. She took him out of school & said she was home schooling him but never really did. It is sad   Idk how someone could let their children not get an education. :\ My friend also got pregnant at 16 and still doesn't have a GED or high school diploma (she is 23 now) :\

I would think that if it's his own parents "homeschooling" him it would be treated as neglect, no?

I was homeschooled and I would call it more of that "life based schooling."
I turned out great. I went to highschool and actually thrived there just as much as, if not more than kids who were in traditional school their whole lives.
I can't think of a time that my mom actually sat me down and made me do "school work."

I think the state should back off really. It's a little ridiculous. If others are conserned with the child's development that's a different story but if the kids seems intelligent and well adjusted who cares how they learn?

ETA: now it would be considered "illegally homeschooled" because we were never registered with the state or anything like that. My mom does have a hs diploma though.
