The registering with the state I can agree with as long as the kid is learning. My concern is the kid I am talking about is learning from the school of xbox360. His sister who is "schooling" him wont even go get her own education.. Always an excuse why she cant go more than an hour or two to the college to get her schooling done.

Um no they are different. One means you completed high school one means you couldn't complete it so you took an equivalent test.

Or you were cheated out of an education and had to take it.

Teachers have to have a degree to teach children, why is it so ridiculous that homeschooling parents have to have the minimum of a GED to teach their children?
I don't think the state needs to back off, at all. It would be an outrage if teachers weren't teaching kids properly and these kids were uneducated, why should the standard be lowered for homeschooled kids?

Im thinking you have to register a homeschool with the state so you can get a legitmate diploma same as people who attend public, private, or charter schools for those that actually want a diploma.

I agree with this 100%.

There are some amazing homeschooling parents out there, don't get me wrong. However, for every one great teaching parent, there are five bad ones, it seems.

A homeschooled kid just won an art contest here in my state and I read a story a few years back where homeschooled kids won the state spelling bee. Home school can be a great tool if done properly.

If. Done. Properly.

I would guess that the people who aren't even willing to follow laws regarding homeschooling aren't the ones doing it properly.

Exactly. My MIL homeschooled all 8 of her children until the point that she felt that they had reached a level that she no longer felt qualified to teach.

Even now, she teaches math as part of a homeschooling co-op. (She has a degree in Mathematics).

If I was to do homeschooling I would find a person for each subject. I know I am not qualified to teach children and I would not want to rob my children of an education.

There are a ton of homeschooling co-ops around.

I create and run the education programs at a small museum and we help out with several homeschooling groups.

My mom had four children who she homeschooled. And of those four of us, all of graduated at the top of the testing class every time. She didn't follow any stupid teaching laws. They are just a tool used to force children back into public schools. I've seen it happen on numerous occasions.
