smoking a hookah while pregnant

posted 18th Feb
ok so I get that a hookah is not the same as a cig but in my mind its still a small chance of issues right?
I have a mom friend here who wasnt able to get the meds she needed to quit smoking for this pregnancy....wont even go into my opinion on that....
So she is wanting to buy my hookah from before I got pregnant with my son and I politely told her while I agree that it is probably better than cigs but I just wasnt comfortable selling it to her knowing she was going to use it while she was pregnant and not even knowing if it would help her smoke less as she had never even used one before....
Is there any ladies on here who used a method such as going from cigs to a e cig or hookah to help stop your smoking habit while pregnant.....I am curious how your children and pregnancy have turned out and what kind of rate of success you guys had...I am not wanting to judge as its your life and I still dont feel comfortable selling a hookah to a pregnant woman so no worries of all that but it has me thinking if this is really a helpful thing for women to pursue or are the other methods to quit out there better

It's really not much better for you than cigarettes. It has less chemicals but it still has nicotine and tar. I quit smoking hookah before I got pregnant because I didn't want any issues. I've also heard that smoking hookah for 30 minutes is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes. IMO the only thing that makes hookah better than cigarettes is the fact that it doesn't stink.

Would I smoke a hookah while pregnant? No.

Would I sell a hookah to someone that was pregnant? Eh, she could just as easily go out and buy one at a store, or cigarettes. But if you don't feel comfortable, don't.

  • Hookah smoke contains high levels of toxic compounds, including tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). In fact, hookah smokers are exposed to more carbon monoxide and smoke than are cigarette smokers.
  • As with cigarette smoking, hookah smoking is linked to lung and oral cancers, heart disease, and other serious illnesses.
  • Hookah smoking delivers about the same amount of nicotine as cigarette smoking, possibly leading to tobacco dependence.
  • Hookah smoke poses dangers associated with secondhand smoke.
  • Hookah smoking by pregnant women can result in low birth weight babies.
  • Hookah pipes used in hookah bars and cafes may not be cleaned properly, risking the spread of infectious diseases.

Suggest that she look into the e-cigs. With those, you're only smoking water vapor that's been flavored. I think those are her best options. They give her the feel and taste of cigarettes, but no tar, no nicotine, etc.

Some don't have nicotine. But many do, because that's the point. You step down on the level of nicotine to help you quit.

The ones my SO got don't have any, but you are right, some do have some nicotine in them.

SMOKING anything is bad for you in generally, but especially in pregnancy because the carbon dioxide levels in your blood stream increase higher than your oxygen levels. She'd be better off going the e-cigarette route as that is vapor and not smoke.

It's basically the same difference. Suggest she invest in an ecig, at least those cut down a bit on the additional additives and chemicals and there is no second hand smoke.

The only ecigs I have seen here have nicotine in them do you guys know of an exact brand that just uses the water vapor....I dont know if it will be helpful to her but I would feel better being able to suggest something like that...thank you guys for finding the actual facts on the hookah for me too btw...I dont know much about it I havent messed with stuff like that for awhile and quiting wasnt a big deal for me but she is a daily smoker and she quit cold turkey with her first pregnancy and miscarried in a car accident started smoking again got pregnant with her DD and took pills to quit well the ob on post is not giving her that option this time and says she needs to at least try a class first which not gonna lie I agree with as seeing she only smokes out of habit when stressed she can go days without picking up one and a healthy habit could be picked up instead but its not me going thru it so I have no right to really say this and I know I cant say it nicely but knowing there are actual ecigs out there with just vapor is pretty awesome and I think could really be what she needs I would love to be able to tell her an exact brand as the ones I see here have nicotine and are basically a portable hookah its just water vapor and nicotine

Mistic brand has their Silver line of cartridges that have no nicotine. That's the brand my SO uses. We get the refills at a gas station in town.

DO they have a website or something....I kind of wish we had a forum on here for moms who are quitting smoking so I could go there and research this better now it has me curious as hell seeing so many different options for people to quit the habit pregnant or not....lots of wives being its a military base smoke while pregnant till the OBs give them these pills but now the new rule is they have to try on their own first if the are a repeat offender of the restarting the habit...Having my own opinion on it and the inability to phrase things right generally makes it hard for me to ask questions and just be curious about it since it is such a touchy subject here

It doesn't sound like she wants to quit smoking though, so she probably wouldnt just want to inhale a water mist. I have a friend who is trying to quit smoking and went from half a pack a day to just taking two puffs from an ecigg a day. SO while it wasen't quitting quitting, it was def a HUGE improvement   And depending how far along she is, some doctors won't suggest it because the withdrawals could cause undue stress last I heard

its just the thing the military base does here and she just starts up right after she is done being pregnant and thinks ecigs are more exspensive after some research turns out its kinda like cloth diapers it is an investment but long term is cheaper and better
