How soon for booking

Okay so I just got engaged on Saturday and I'm so freaking excited! We will be having a courthouse wedding and then a huge and nice reception. We aren't for sure set on a date yet, but I'm thinking like May 25th, 2014. I want to start looking around at places where we could have a reception. But I'm honestly not sure how long in advance we should book something? And do you normally have to pay for it right when you book it? Oh and if you have any amazing ideas for decorations, feel free to share them

This. As far as the payment, it will depend on the place. Usually when you book they'll have you put down a deposit, and then you are expected to make full payment a month or two before the reception.

I'd say, pick a date, and start looking for a place to look immediately. They usually will book a year + in advance  

And as far as paying, most places have you put down a deposit and then pay as it gets closer, I think.
