group b and home birth

posted 17th Feb
if you had or are having a home birth and you have gbs, how is or how was it treated? ive had it my last 2 births, so i know it will be positive again. in a hospital i would get iv meds and be induced, like i was with my last 2 kids. but we are home birthing this time around, and my midwife is super holistic and doesnt use many medications ive noticed. she mentioned using yogurt/peroxide to get rid of it, but im not sure how.

Personally I wouldnt be doing it, if you NEED meds then you need to be in the hospital. Homebirths IMO are for mothers that dont need any kinds of meds or have any problems

when I was researching home births I found a few articles about mom's whose babies died after they gave birth at home while GBS + The babies developed infections and died. I told DH I wouldn't be birthing at home if I was GBS + for that reason.

well my midwife really doesnt consider it an issue, and from what i have found, its rally much of an issue as long as the baby is healthy and term.

From what I gathered it comes and goes. So u may be positive or not but still could or could not be at time of delivery. You just have to be aware of the signs of it. Maybe get tested later in your preg. See your midwife's opinion and experience. Maybe an oral antibiotic a week before your dd could help? I'm not sure how that works.

IMO home births are not for mothers who dont have any kind of complication, including GBS+ status. If you need meds during labor, you should be in the hospital. GHS is not something you should take lightly when it come to your baby. It's VERY possible to transmit it to the baby if it isnt treated appropriately, and you really can't do that at home.

Well if you trust her then why even post? I said what I think. And I just think if you have any kind of issues you shouldnt be birthing at home.

My doctors have all said that it's important to have the antibiotics in labor because baby could get really sick. I had it with my daughter. I wouldn't be messing around with the midwife's holistic ideas... I'd be sticking to what the rule of thumb is.... antibiotics... I seriously advise against a home birth if she can't treat you with IV antibiotics.

Okay... risk your baby's life by not getting proper treatment for GBS. Smart.

and my midwife was fully aware of the gbs in my last 2 pregnancy's and wasnt concerned, shes pretty sure she can treat it, or else i doubt she would have taken me.

Why post if you Trust your midwife and don't care what we have to say?

Ok but if shes wrong you're the one that will have to live with hurting your child just because you wanted to birth only one way...your way. Sometimes it just doesnt go your way but you're a mom you should just deal with it. I promise you I had no want to be cut up and have seizures but it happened and I delt with it.

I've heard of midwives administering antibiotics at home.

Find the facebook group Birth Without Fear and ask the question there. You will get responses from women with a more like-minded view on birth. I was GBS+ and I did a hospital birth but they were fine with me not being hooked up to the IV constantly and intermittent monitoring until I got the epidural.

Search for articles on the CDC and AAP's website. They have statistics of complications. They may settle any fears (they did for me!)

"Pretty sure she can treat it" is not convincing enough for me. When it comes to your child's LIFE... "pretty sure" should never be enough to settle for.

Do what you wish. I don't know why the hell you came on here asking questions if you were so secure with your midwife's plan of action, anyways.
