can't breastfeed - super depressed :(

posted 17th Feb
So, I had to have an induction at 36 wks due to toxemia/cord being around my son's neck. I was put on mag & all sorts of meds & then had to have an emergency c-section after 12 hours of labor. Afterwards I was out of it and couldn't breastfeed/barely hold my son. My son's dr./my obgyn advised against breastfeeding because I had to stay on high blood press. medication since they couldn't get my blood press. to come down, I'm on antibiotics atm, and from the pain pills(I'm off of those now). Because of the blood press. meds my son's dr. doesn't want me breastfeeding and its killing me. I have breastfed all of my children. I don't get much milk anyways & I dry up by 2 months. I look at my little one and feel like I have failed him. He is my last baby - I got a tubal due to health reasons & I really want to breastfeed him. Super depressed.

what medication is it? I was on dozens of medications including IV BP meds and numerous pain meds and antibiotics and that didn't stop me from at least pumping and eventually breastfeeding. your doctor is not an expert in meds and breastfeeding aske a lactation consultant. there are VERY few meds that one must stop breastfeeding for

I appreciate that - I know the health dept. has a lactation consultant and I'm going to call her monday. I would prefer to breastfeed & if I get the okay from her I will. Thank you

pump and dump for now to maintain a supply - every 2 hours during the day and at least every 4 hours at night. If you want I can look up the med for you.

if this is correct then its an L2 and the antibiotic is an L3 based on dr. hale's lactation risk category:

L1 SAFEST:
Drug which has been taken by a large number of breastfeeding mothers without any observed increase in adverse effects in the infant. Controlled studies in breastfeeding women fail to demonstrate a risk to the infant and the possibility of harm to the breastfeeding infant is remote; or the product is not orally bioavailable in an infant.
L2 SAFER:
Drug which has been studied in a limited number of breastfeeding women without an increase in adverse effects in the infant. And/or, the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely to follow use of this medication in a breastfeeding woman is remote.
L3 MODERATELY SAFE:
There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
L4 POSSIBLY HAZARDOUS:
There is positive evidence of risk to a breastfed infant or to breastmilk production, but the benefits of use in breastfeeding mothers may be acceptable despite the risk to the infant (e.g. if the drug is needed in a life-threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective).
L5 CONTRAINDICATED:
Studies in breastfeeding mothers have demonstrated that there is significant and documented risk to the infant based on human experience, or it is a medication that has a high risk of causing significant damage to an infant. The risk of using the drug in breastfeeding women clearly outweighs any possible benefit from breastfeeding. The drug is contraindicated in women who are breastfeeding an infant.
the antibiotic was given an L3 rather then L2 because extended use could be problematic in certain infant - like preterm ones. The BP med is definately ok for use

no problem - lemme know how it goes. Good luck sounds like you have had a rough time. I know when I had horrible medical stuff go down, my lifeline to sanity was my ability to at least pump for my baby and then when i got home, to actually breastfeed.

i had a diseased gallbladder and the local hospital would send me home with pain meds and switch to cows milk when dd was 8 months old. they gave me a shot of morphine and said i couldnt nurse for 7 days. i knew better but alot of people dont. its 4 hours. not 7 days. finally went to a hospital in another town and state since i got on my moms insurance and they took it and stored my clean milk b4 they gave me pain meds. dd was 11 months when i had my surgery. honestly i wouldnt listen to docs or nurses about it. they arnt trained like llc's

its bactrim its commonly used and I see it given to breastfeeding moms a lot on a short term basis. It can be given on a long term basis for UTI prevention and that is where the real risk lies - daily doses for months

that's so dumb morphine is safe in breastfeeding - its given to c-section mom's for pain all the time and they don't have to stop breastfeeding. If I could breastfeed while on fentanyl, propofol, dilantin and nurontin I think morphine is ok lol smurf doctors are stupid about breastfeeding.
