Write it in a highlighter, and have her trace it with her pencil. Try that and see if she's interested. You can use different colors of highlighters and it becomes a "game" of sorts.

My son can't do it either... he's 4 1/2. It's frustrating, but I do think he will get it. He's very smart, but he just has a hard time with letters. Every kid is different. He has an amazing vocabulary, though... it's weird, and frustrating. And yes, can make you feel like a smurffy mother.

Try not to get discouraged around her. I find that my son picks up on my cues when I'm trying to teach him something.

Also, stuff like this (unless it has to be pen/pencil)

write her name, and have her trace it with her q-tip.

I will try it, but I doubt she'll even do that, she has a mind of her own and everything is "hard"...I'm scared she's going to be held back next year!

Did you try letting her trace your letters? Do you have an I-Pad or I-Pod-they have fantastic letter phonics tracing apps. The more she practices the better, but you don't want to make her hate it right. BTW your kids abilities or lack thereof aren't an indication of your parenting-don't beat yourself up.

do connect the dots. work on each letter at a time and she will eventually get it. do it a few times a day every day and she will get it.

Write it and keep having her trace it. Can she recognize letters? Is this the first time you guys are working on it at home?

DD is in OT, and I have worked with her a lot with different techniques.

- Writing letters for her and having her trace over them.
- Practicing writing letters in shaving cream on the table.
- Dot out letters and have her trace them.
- Try hand over hand - your hand over hers and help her with the letter formation.

I have no advice. But..Maybe encourage her when she tries?

My nephew is 5 1/2 and he couldn't write when he began kindergarten. Now, he is slowly learning..Although, he writes his name backward, some how.

Thanks, I'm going to try some of these tonight.

I just feel like she should atleast know how to write her name, all the other kids in her class room do, I just kinda feel like her teacher thinks she's dumb or something, she hasn't said anything, but she did say something like "Hazel doesn't know her colours, or numbers"

I cant help but feel bad!

Don't feel bad, really, but I kind of felt the same way. DD is 6 yrs old and just this past month or so she really started writing her name where it is legible.

Work with her and if that doesn't seem to help get the advice from a doctor maybe some OT would help.

Is she in kindergarten or preschool?

You could do the letters in dots and have her trace around them.
She'll pick it up soon don't stress about it! She's not dumb
How is she adjusting to school? Was she put into year 0 or straight into year 1?

Tried that tonight, she did really well the first couple of times, then her mind was some where esle and gave up.

Yup she's in year 0, whatever that means...there are only 7 kids in the class, they seem all smart lol.
