i keep seeing this term on here. what makes a name a filler? where are you all getting the names on your filler list? what names do you consider fillers?

Lee or Leigh is definitely a filler. I think extremely common middle names like Marie, Elizabeth, Lee/Leigh etc are all considered fillers. I'm Jessica-Lee so techniaclly it's not a middle name, and if I have a daughter her middle name will be Elizabeth after my grandmother. Fillers aren't always bad lol

Filler names are middle names that are used SO often that they have lost their flair. They are usually used because they are one syllable (not all) and because they "go with" the first name (i.e. they sound nice).

Examples of filler middle names:
Grace
Rose
Marie
Elizabeth
Lynn
Michelle
Claire
Jane

James
Michael

Names that are so commonly and overly used that many people feel there's nothing special about them anymore. I think it is because people feel their child HAS to have a middle name, so go for those no brainer names.

FOR GIRLS:
May/Mae
Leigh
Lynn
Marie
Faith
Grace
Hope
Joy
Ray/Rae
Claire
Rose
Ann(e)
Dawn

FOR BOYS:
James
Robert
Michael
Paul
Lee
John

mine and one of DD's middle names is on all those lists. Marie. but it's special to me because it goes back 5 generations counting DD (but not counting my mom). My mom's is Ann.

Well if it is special to you, then who cares? Marie is just such a common middle name. Almost half of my graduating class had the middle name Marie (or Elizabeth).

That is entirely different than sticking a name in to "fill" a space.

I understand.

I personally would like to see Rose and Marie in the front spot. Meeting a little girl name Rose or Marie would be darling! I find that as first names, most of these "fillers" are unappreciated and are always shoved in the middle.

i know, but ppl will probably think that's what i did. though DD has 2 middle names i'm not sure how they'd think that.

growing up, i hated my 1st name and would beg ppl to call me Marie! everyone said i don't look like a Marie so they never would... DH wanted Rose for DD and i said no because it's popular (not necessarily as a 1st name) and ppl would think i got it from Titanic. don't get me wrong, it's a good movie but not on my fave list. lol.

When I think of filler names I think I really common one syllable middle names like Jane, rose, lee, Lynn, Ann, rae, etc. Or for boys lee, James, John, ray, jay, etc

My daughter's middle name is Claire. I hadn't actually heard it used as a middle name on any child until I name her and found out people consider is to be a "filler" name. I don't really care though, it's always been one of my favorite names and it's my husband's grandmother's name, so other people's feelings about it really don't matter.

LOL This kills me. Because my top choices for a middle name for a girl are Claire, Grace, and Rose. I love love love Claire.

2 out of my 3 kids have what's considered "filler" names. But mainly because I'm just simple minded. Haha. My oldests middle name is Lee. And my youngests middle name is Jane.

Oldest is named after a movie star. (Thank you BD)

But my youngest is after my SIL who passed when she was 15 months. So it's special to DH.
