babys weight

posted 16th Feb
at my 36 week ultrasound visit my baby girl weighed in at 5 pounds 1 ounce, the doctor said to come in in a week and if she didn't gain 4 ounces they would induce me, so we went back a week later and got another ultrasound and she gained 4 ounces. doctor dosnt seem worried because my mom had babies that were 6 in a half pounds but im worried because 5 pounds 5 ounces seems small, and if she gains 4 ounces a week until shes born then she will only be 6 pounds 1 ounce and that seems a little too small?

DD was 6lbs 11oz.
Ultrasounds can be off on weights. Try not to stress, it'll be okay

Good luck!

There is no way for them to know for sure how much she weighs...so this business about them telling you "she needs to gain 4 ounces" is silly
because there isn't any way for them to tell if she gains 4oz or not. It's an estimate, that's all.

I had friends that were told they'd need c-secs because their babys were over 10lb based on ultrasound.. Babies came out between 6lb9 and 8lb2. They can be extremely off.

This. They are stressing you out for no good reason. Yes, six pounds is small, but I wouldn't say too small, and really, they have no way of knowing how accurate their guess is.

My Dr. tried to pull that one with me! Glad I decided to have a Vag delivery despite what he said, because DS. was exactly 6lbs 90z

I think it's horrible how they try and bully you into c-sec because baby is "too big". Our bodies were made deliver babies and it's rare that a baby will grow bigger than the mother is capable of delivering IMO.

My midwife was going on about how I may need help delivering coz I have narrow hips or pelvis or something. He did get stuck, they called the doc in to do a vacuum delivery but through sheer willpower I somehow managed to get his head out literally as the doctor walked through the door. I didn't want the episiotomy lol

Yay for you! Your midwife needs to read Gloria Lemay's article on pelvises. :p Curious, on your back?

They can be off, try not to worry.

At 35 weeks, my daughter was 7lbs 13oz, went back at 37 weeks and she was 9lbs 13oz, I had her at 39 weeks, and she was 10lbs 10oz...so in my case they were right.

Be very careful with the medical professionals trying to induce labor. More and more they find any reason to induce which is not good for either mother or baby unless baby is in serious trouble. When it comes to ultrasounds, not only are they usually off on the weight of the baby (which can be up to 3-5lbs) but the more ultrasounds that a person has can actually cause the baby to slow it's growth. We need to keep in mind that each baby is different and shouldn't be compared to what 'they' consider as 'normal'. As long as your pregnancy has been progressing healthfully then there isn't reason for concern. Make sure you eat, exercise, and sleep the best you can and eliminate stress as much as possible. You'll be just fine!

I was told exactly this with my first, said she was going to be a 8 or 9lb baby... Wrong! She was 6lbs 5oz...  . They can be extremely off!
