Quoting Amelia Margaret:" Did they seriously not do a vaginal ultrasound in the ER???"

This is going to sound crazy, especially with my history, but I've never had a vaginal U/S when i've gone into L&D for contractions. They normally just do a manual exam to see if i'm dilating through the stitch.

If i got an appointment squeezed in at my regular high risk dr, she would give me a vaginal U/S before even looking at me though.

It's a huge song and dance to get a vaginal U/S done at the regular L&D.

Even my MFM refused to do one before I was 18 weeks. I don't understand this. If I'd had one at my 13 week appointment I know he would have seen that my cervix was shortening and maybe something could have been done.

I think that's where it gets tricky. I had not 1 but 2 U/S done slightly before 20 weeks. My 2nd U/S (with my first baby) was 3 days (approx 21w4d) before i ended up on hospital bedrest due to premature dilation at 22 weeks. I know they looked at my cervix. This was at my regular OB before they knew i had issues.

It's possible i dilated suddenly, but I had bulging membranes when i went in. I think that takes time, but maybe I'm wrong.

My cervix checks normally start around 10 weeks give or take via U/S. Thank god too because I had funneling at 10 weeks (very slight). Then no funneling at 11 weeks and dilated 2cm's by the time my cerclage was placed at 12.5 weeks. I recognized it this past time too. I had nightmares and everything. I did just about poop my pants though when i lost my mucus plug the night before cerclage placement. I was never so thankful that I had an awesome dr who listened to me and who decided to put my cerclage in earlier even though the U/S didn't show anything extreme going on. I do, however, have a few new white hairs.

My water broke at 15 weeks and I had that pressure feeling starting at 12-13 weeks. I know if I'd only been checked he would at the very least have seen funneling. I feel that the MFM was negligent because I was referred to him as being at high risk for IC and he has never checked my cervix. He refused to follow up with me after I lost my daughter and when I asked about getting an assessment for my cervix to make a plan for a future pregnancy and discuss cerclage, I was told his office doesn't do that. My OB does. WTH.

I kind of threw up my hands at that point (his is the only MFM practice in town) and said to hell with them. I can't afford to get subpar care regarding my cervix in a future pregnancy. I have taken things into my own hands and paying out of pocket for my TAC in April. This will NOT happen to me again.

Yeah 15 weeks is really early, although i guess if my cervix wasn't checked, it could have happened last pregnancy to me too. I am pretty shocked that your high risk dr didn't look at your cervix. I think it's pretty standard for most peri's to get a base measurement before any sort of changes take place. I have heard some pretty amazing stuff about the TAC.

I've had 2 mcdonald's and a shirodkar. Because I have a ton of non-functioning (yay for massive amounts of useless cervix! lol) cervix, a regular TVC works for me. I also have a lot of contractions around 34 weeks, so I need the stitch to be removable. If it wasn't removable, I would have had to deliver earlier than I have been able to. (39w5d with my 2nd pregnancy and oldest son, 37w1d with my middle son, and 38ish (although they suspect i was earlier than they thought) weeks with my youngest).

I hope things work out for you and you have a very long and boring next pregnancy.

ALOT of pressure on my vag and slightly crampy and braxton hicks all frigging day long going on two days now. i don't want to overreact and run to the hospital but it is freaking me out.

Yeah I will have to have a c-section at 38 weeks but with my history it's doubtful that I'd make it even that far with a TVC. And thank you! I am definitely ready for a boring pregnancy.

They can see all that through an abdominal us.... why is a vaginal so important? Can they only see the strings that way?

Quoting Is that still my name?:" They can see all that through an abdominal us.... why is a vaginal so important? Can they only see the strings that way?"
It needs to be transvaginal to see if the cervix is shortening and/or funneling.
