re: Letting organ donor's die D&D

Quoting Mommy2Kay:" They actually can, I researched it. Once a doctor considers you brain dead they do not have to wait ... [snip!] ... get your organs. I read of a few cases that patients who were considered brain dead came back to life, that is a little scary."

Then that kind of freaks me out :/
I might have to consider changing it....

Is this a man thing? My SO feels the same way and he is not a donor.

We have a severe over-population issue, so sadly that doesn't really surprise me. I would hope and assume that they try to save someone's life in critical condition, if not because they care, because it looks good on their record that they saved a life. Ask your family to pay VERY close attention to you, to come rushing when you're at the hospital in a bad condition and to fight tooth and nail for your survival, and to threaten to sue the doctors and everything if they don't do EVERYTHING they can do to save your life.

I am an organ donor too and if your SO is right, I won't change that I'm an organ donor.

Quoting 10 til Gwen:" If that happened I'd like to know why the smurf a first responder or doctor was taking the time to check a license for the organ donor checkmark during an emergency."
That's another point but they actually gather people's belongings as they cut everything out and hand it to someone at the hospital. That person knows as soon as he/she see's their ID. First responders can't declare a person brain dead.

I am a donor, but the thing I don't get is why would they give up on me just to use my organs for others? Unless it was someone they knew personally that needed them. Honestly though i don't care. I'd rather be a donor so that if something DID happen (not that the doctors cheaped out on trying) but I couldn't be saved then my organs could be used. It's a risk worth taking imo.

We got into a debate about it, in the 7 years I have known him I never knew he wasn't one. It really caught me by surprise but we ended it in me doing some research so it's not over lol.

Donor or not a doctor will try to save every patient the same way! My uncle had a double lung transplant it saved his life, I would love to know that I helped save someone with my organs.

Coming from someone who worked in the OR for a trauma center...I never saw the doc stop to check the patient's chart to see if they were donors or not, they rushed people in and tried to save them....period.

I would think that too but either way they could be potentially be saving someone's life, either the person who needs the organ or the donor.

That's a very good point! I feel very strongly about wanting to help others, it just really does scare me that there have been people that went from brain dead to perfectly healthy people.

idk but i would think there probably arent very many docs out there willing to risk a malpractice lawsuit over a few organs. not saying it wouldnt or never has happened but i doubt its something that goes on often

I'm a donor but DH refuses and I think it's for this reason. TBH it really scares me that this might happen if I were to be in critical condition..

I'm an organ donor, and it's one of the things I'm most proud about. My late-fiance was not one, until a few months before his death when I talked to him about it and he officially registered. When he committed suicide, our whole world and family were shattered. But the best part about my fiance was his heart, which after his death, was donated to a man in California who gets to celebrate his birthday, gets to grow old with his family, and can enjoy time with friends. That's what organ donation is all about to me--a sense of hope in a time of sadness.

Anyway, that was a bit irrelevant from the question here. I'm sure there have been a few cases where this might have happened, however, it is illegal.
