Breaking your water to start labor

posted 15th Feb
Does it hurt, badly? Did anyone's doctor break their water in order to induce them, without Pitocin? I'm going to the hospital in 6 days and my doctor is going to break my water. I'm not getting any Pitocin. I'm scared it's going to be super painful! Lol. I was only 1/2 cm dilated on Wed. and my doc said something to the effect of, "Well.... it's enough for me to break your water," it didn't sound very encouraging. Lol.

It's not painful. A cervix check is worse.

The act of getting your water broken does not hurt. I've had it done 3 times, you just feel a big warm gush, no pain. But, after it's broken baby can drop down a little bit more and make things uncomfortable. Also after your water breaks, it's a continuous thing. You'll pretty much be leaking til the baby comes out, so keep that in mind also.

It's painless but absolutely awful if you can't stand feeling wet between your legs. I also hated that I felt like I was peeing myself and unable to control it.

Every contraction...GUSH.

  This

My water broke at home (obviously it didn't hurt) but the gushing was constant, and just a few minutes after it broke, I had an immense amount of pressure and stronger contractions.

lol Seriously.

I had a condition called polyhydramnios (excessive amount of amniotic fluid) so mine was POURING out the entire time. I didn't even have to be having a contraction, it gushed out constantly. My water broke at home, it SOAKED my car seat and left a big huge stream all the way through the hospital  ...it was so damn embarrassing !

Breaking your water is a good, painless way to help start labor. But if your body is not ready for labor it's not like it is a jump start of labor for sure. If you do not progress they will start pitocin. Just thought I would throw that out there.

It hurt me. I was induced w/ my son (my 1st baby) on my due date. I went in the night before my due date & they inserted the Cervadil, left it in for 12hrs & removed it at 8am then broke my water, blood & meconium came out when they did it. They didn't start pitocen until 11am....that was the worst though!! The pitocen caused MAJOR contractions & my labor was soooo much more intense w/ it. If I knew what I know now I wouldn't have been induced unless ABSOLUTELY necessary!

No they won't. I'm having (trying for) a VBAC. If I don't progress, I'll have to have a RCS.

Doesn't hurt at all. With DS1 they broke it and the wetness between my legs was the worst. With DS2 the sweet nurse came in about every 2 hours and woke me up and put a fresh towel between my legs.

At least they can't use pitocin, they damn near forced it on me. I refused it twice, but once they gave me something to "take the edge off" and I got loopy , they convinced me to let them start it. I was so pissed...I don't even remember telling them it was OK.
