re: Breaking your water to start labor

posted 15th Feb
I had my water broken with all 3, my last one was no Pitocin. No pain. But it can make the contractions come on strong and fast after it's broken.

The doctor broke my water both times and the second time it hurt like a bitch. Not them breaking my water, but the fact that I had to wait 30 minutes after they broke my water to get the epidural. Those contractions hurt!

I appluad you!!!!! Woman trying for a VBAC should get a metal or something. So many are too afraid to even try. I hope by them breaking your water it will work for you.

Make sure that you post up your labor story! I am having a VBAC in May and I am scared to death. I was cut up and down on my tummy for my emergency c-section, but my uterus was cut side to side. They said I was the perfect candidate for a "trial of labor" as they called it. I am only 25 weeks but I go in on the 25th to talk to the docs that are delivering about what will happen if I go overdue, induction, and what happens if I need another c-section.

I will let you know how it goes, for sure!

And good luck to you, mama!!

You're not due till the 26th and they're breaking your waters before then? Why?
Look into AROM more for yourself before you consent! If your labor doesn't start after they break your waters, and it often doesn't (especially since you're not even due yet), or seems to start and stops, you're headed straight for another cesarian. If you truly want a VBAC, you need to say no to your doctor and wait until baby is ready on his/her own, however long that takes.
This is a good article, the brief section "Advantages to Keeping the Bag of Waters Intact." This one is good too. This one is even better.
I hope you feel empowered and informed to make your own decision about what is best for you and your baby, and don't just go along with the doctor (whatever you decide).
ETA I just saw you're only a 1/2 cm dilated? From what I've read, most doctors won't even consider AROM for induction unless you're 3 or prefer4 cm and effaced. A woman can be half a cm for half the pregnancy. I doubt your body is ready yet!

I'm not due on the 26th. I'm due on the 23rd and she's breaking my water on the 22nd at 10 PM. And I can't go over-due because of complications, or I would wait as long as possible. I'm trying to have the labor that I want, even though I have a lot going against me. I've talked to midwives, doctors, nurses, and done my own research and have come up with this as the best option. Why does everyone always assume that, because you're not making the decision they would make (even though they have no idea what you're dealing with), that you're not making an "informed decision"???   And a woman can also be 3 cm for forever and not be ready, just like a woman can go from 1/2 cm to active labor over night. Dilation doesn't necessarily mean anything, according to my research. And I have a Dr's appointment two days before to go over our options and see where our progress is. It's I try this, or I have a C-section. Those are my options. I'm doing the best I can with what I have.

Thanks for all the encouragement, though.

Sorry, I misread your due date. And I didn't mean to assume you were uninformed; it's just that so many are! Obviously you are making an informed, empowered decision in your best interests, and I'm sure I would make the same decision in your position. I hope everything goes well for you and you can have the birth you've been fighting for! Sorry again.

I was induced and my son was up high. Doctor tried breaking my water and it literally felt like she was elbow deep in me   it was horrible. I could feel my body moving up the bed on its own to get away from the pain!!! The first time, it was just a warm gush. Not sure if my son being high made it much worse.

I believe some women just want something to debate.

I got it A LOT when I said I was being induced at 39 weeks (medical reasons, and he was born on his own at 37 anyway.) None of them had and idea why I was doing it, and they were all ganging up on me. Happens often on here, I hate it.

I can't speak for others, but I never intend to gang up on someone. So many women seem to just trust their doctors, and so many doctors do things that aren't evidence-based or in the best interests of women and babies. I just want more women to be informed and take charge of their care instead of trusting whatever the doctor says. And I am sorry when I am wrong. Like now.
