GD and breastfeeding

posted 14th Feb
My baby might need a sugar drink at birth, will they give her a bottle without my consent or can I request she be given it by IV? Which way is standard? Do they ask you? And would the bottle really effect her latch?

What should I do?

I wouldnt put an IV in unless needed. Just ask for a syringe and avoid both. Not sure what is standard but I would ask if thats an option.

That actually sounds like an obviously better method than both... Why wouldn't they just do that?

Who do I tell, the doctor?

I would just ask your OB at your next appointment about your options. Ive never had GD or heard of babies needing a sugar drink so im really uneducated it was just the first thing that came to my mind.

you'd seriously choose having her get an IV over a bottler?

1 bottle is not going to put a kink into your breastfeeding routine.

I've breastfed both of my kids, but allowed the hospital to give them formula when I needed a nap. They were both BF for at least 12 months.

Really? I was afraid of nipple confusion and not initiating good latch :/
So is it okay for her to get the bottle, it probably won't effect it?

I've heard mixed things.
The syringe sounds good..

1 bottle shouldn't cause issues but if the syringe is an option I would choose that if it were me. Its not something I would want to risk and I have heard of people having issues after 1 bottle (not often but still happens). Although I would choose bottle over IV any day.

i think it really just depends on the baby. my son had trouble latching bcuz he had a pacifier before i had a chance to nurse him. it took a little time but he did latch and has been breastfeeding for 21months.

So it's not something to freak out over? I don't know how common or serious nipple confusion is...main thing- is it always able to be overcome with effort?

My son nursed 23 months and we had a hard time with him falling off his first few weeks so im really afraid, idk...

yes its fine. Especially, when you're thinking of that over an IV.. c'mon use a little common sense.

I was just imagining not being able to breastfeed, I essentially even thinking of the IV as an IV but now that I do, yes that is a crazy preference..

I was reading online how I can start expressing now and save it and bring my colostrum with a syringe instead.. If I froze it from now until delivery (5 or 6 weeks) would it stay good?

one time shoudlnt make a difference. if youre talking about more over a period of time then id be worried. and most common reason babies refuse the breast is not bcuz they dont know how to latch its bcuz they prefer the bottle since it flows faster and they dont have to work for the milk

You want baby to nurse as much as possible after birth to bring in your milk and help establish supply. Pumping can also cause contractions and pre-term labor. There is no reason to pump at all just nurse your baby.

So basically I should have no worries, let them do what they go with her after birth, then just nurse her the same way I did my Ron, and I can safely bet well still be nursing in a year or two?

If so, thank you for the info, it takes a weight off..I'm too stressed as it is and that was one more concern I didn't need..
