Question ab HIV and breast feeding?

posted 14th Feb
Just something out of curiosity... if a woman has HIV and has a baby, would she be able to breast feed the baby without a chance or the baby contracting HIV? (granted the woman delivered through cesarean amd baby didn't contract it at birth.) No, I'm not HIV positive, nor do I know anyone who is, just watching the episode of Without a Trace where a pregnant woman with HIV goes missing, and it made me curious.

Yes. Breast milk can pass HIV.

Wouldn't a baby have HIV anyway?
I mean the blood pumping through the placenta/cord is from HER body.. Right?
And also weather vaginal or c section.. Wouldn't blood/bodily fluid get into their mouth?

Nope. There is about a 15% chance of a baby contracting HIV through vaginal birth.

As for breastfeeding, that is a big no no.

You'd think so, but not all babies get the infection from mother. They are very lucky though, most do. But I'd still think BFing wouldn't be encouraged if the baby even was positive. Just more if the virus for its tiny body to fight, kwim?

The risk of infection is roughly 1 in 3 if the mother breastfeeds her child, although being on effective HIV treatment significantly reduces this risk. Women are advised not to breastfeed if there is a safe alternative to breast milk.

Wow. It's awesome that the Rae of transfer is that low. That's great for the babies.

Sorry for the misinformation in my last post, OP (I said MOST mothers pass it to their fetus)

If a woman is on the correct anti virals there is a very low chance of her baby contracting HIV through the womb. HIV infected women should not breastfeed.

Actually, the chances of baby having HIV are only somewhere around 50%!

I have no idea where you got this statistic. An HIV-positive mother who is not being treated for her HIV during pregnancy, labor, or delivery has a 25% chance (1 in 4) of passing the virus to her baby. If she chooses to breastfeed, there is an additional 12% chance of transmission. A woman who is on the appropriate drugs only has a 4-10% chance of transmitting HIV to her baby. I have read a few books about this. But from this thread, I am surprised how misinformed people are.

I read 15% with proper treatment. But it could have been outdated.
