Yeah, I mean honestly it depends on the source. But I was surprised about the ladies who though an HIV infected woman would indefinitely have an HIV infected baby.

I know that with any pregnancy and disease, there's always so much of a chance of the baby getting it.

i recently just read online and the regulations for BF and having hiv states that women can and should bf...the meds that they take reduce the risk of transmission... but it is suggested now that women can bf with HIV

Quoting RonniG:" I have no idea where you got this statistic. An HIV-positive mother who is not being treated for her ... [snip!] ... HIV to her baby. I have read a few books about this. But from this thread, I am surprised how misinformed people are. "

It's 20-40%... Obviously, 20% is the conservative number... and she's not supposed to breastfeed!

The reason a pregnant woman can prevent passing the infection to her baby is if she takes her medication, deliver via c-section and don't breast feed. Because the baby's immune system does not develop fully and isn't fully functional until birth the baby is at a low risk of contracting the infection via prenatal blood circulation. The baby's first set of antibody and immunity comes from breast milk for six months after that the baby starts developing their or immunity. HIV needs t-cell to replicate and these cells arnt developed until after the birth of the baby.
