re: Microchipping a cat?

posted 16th Feb
My current cats are shelter cats who were microchipped when we got them, but past pets were always microchipped at the vet's office. They got the kind that's about the size of a grain of rice (maybe a smidge smaller) and injected into the back of their neck area. There was never any subscription fee or any other charges besides whatever the initial fee was.

As far as microchipping an indoor cat, I think it's just up to you. If your cat is the curious type who tries to go outside, I'd definitely get it. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter.

Ok thank you.

I checked into the subscription fee thing. They use a company that you have to pay the company the yearly fee, not the vet.

Cat scratch fever can also be transmitted through their saliva onto broken skin. So if your child has a cut and is licked... it can be transmitted. So if that's your worry, I'd give the cat to another home. I sure as hell wouldn't declaw my cat. I will say that I had strictly indoor cats that escaped outside numerous times and I am SO glad they had their claws because one of my cats had to escape a dog that ate cats. Another time she had to find refuge in a tree on a mountain because the stubborn ass cat wouldn't come to me. She was out overnight and Im glad she could go in a tree because we had coyotes and other animals that would tear her apart if she went far enough into the mountain.

I would get your cat microchipped either way. And leave the back claws but declaw the front ones. We had a cat get out once and it helped us find her. Enjoy your new kitty!

Have you thought about using soft paws? I dont know anything about cat scratch fever but my cats scratching was problematic for me. He scratched my furniture, the wood in my house, and kept attacking my son. One day I got so fed up with it that I got him the soft paws and I am so glad I did.

In your case, I can see why you want to declaw Nina. Just make sure the vet does the procedure correctly because if he doesn't he can cause her tons of pain and infections . That being said, a microchip is worthwhile because cat collars break off when caught on something and who knows when LO or a visitor may let Nina escape by accident. Good luck with your kitty
