What would you do?? :(

posted 14th Feb
Our car is in the shop and needs an engine, they estimate it'll cost around 2400 dollars to get it fixed. It's a 2002 chevy malibu and I don't know if its even worth that, we spent 3700 dollars on it last year around this time. I'm not sure if we should fix it or pay them for what we owe them and tow it off to get crushed for money and look for another used car...I've found a couple of good deals in our bargain finder but neither of the people answered their phones so I'm going to try at a different time. Off topic, what time do you think would be too late to call someone? I have no idea lol.

How much do you owe the shop for looking at it? Honestly you won't get more than a few hundred for scrapping it. I would ask the shop if they're interested in buying it (they can put an engine in it for cheaper than your quote). But 2400 for a new engine is a lot for that year & you could probably buy another used one for cheaper

best we could do is buy another used car as paying payments later down the road is not an option as we are also hoping to move out soon. We are probably just gonna go ahead and get another..

I'm not sure yet as they haven't said, I plan on calling them tomorrow or us going up there and letting them know we probably won't be getting it fixed and see what our other options are, whichever gets the more money to help us towards the other car is what we'll go with.

I bought a great Honda Accord on Craigslist for 2500 dollars, and I haven't had any problems with it at all! look into something made by Honda and ask them if you can take it to your mechanic to have them check it out before you buy it! it's honestly a much better deal than trying to repair your current car...

I have been looking all over and haven't seen any honda's but I'll keep my eyes open. We also can't drive too far to look at a car and it seems everyone around here is trying to get rid of a chevy, ford, or truck which wouldn't work at all. I've been looking on craigslist, our fb page for selling/trading cars, and a bargain finder. It also seems to be hard to find one for a good deal that doesn't have a crap ton of miles on it.

We'll definitely look into all of our options. Geez it seems every single year we are going to have to get a freaking car with our tax money lol. I've been carless since right before Christmas, at least SO still has his work car.

I just picked up a 01 saturn coupe for 1600 on CL. Definently take someone who knows cars or to a mechanic asap. A lot of people are struggling for money & are selling their cars for cheap right now. Chevy, honda, saturn & nisson are usually really good cars. Steer clear of volkswagons (the parts & repair are expensive) pt cruisers and dodge stratus

I know how it feels. I wrecked our main car in july, totaled it. Luckily we had the other car & our suburban but its a gas hog. I was spending 500 a month just on gas to drive it

Do you think a 2004 Chevy Cavalier for 1500 is a good deal? He didn't list much info, I have to find out if its a 4 door and how many miles it has and if its in good shape. There was also 2003 Cavalier for 1500 dollars too...neither of the people answered their phones though and I'm not too sure if I should leave a message or call back..

That's not a bad deal considering they're 2004 vehicles. I just bought a 2004 SUV Toyota Highlander for $13,000.

Oh wow lol! I guess it depends on the miles and condition of the car. I want to try to call again but not sure if 6:00 would be too late.
