Student Loan Rant

posted 14th Feb
How am I suppose to pay off my student loans when SO is the only one working? We are struggling as it is. We aren't married and right now there isn't really a way for me to get a job. We only have one car and with his hours I have a limited availability. I have applied places, even had a phone interview, but they said I needed an open schedule, so until then they couldn't hire with me. If I got a part time or full time even job working when SO worked, which would require me taking a bus, all my pay would basically go to child care.

I regret going back to school in the first place. I got an associates degree in Medical Administration, which is basically just someone who runs the front desk of a doctor's office. You don't even need a degree to do that. It's a highly competitive field. I was stupid for not researching the degree in the first place. But after meeting with the lady in administrations, I felt pressured to sign up.

I am so mad at myself. My credit is going to be ruined because I can't pay on it. I screwed myself.

Does anyone know of any programs that could help me?

Ask for a forbearance. My loans were stalled for a year. They usually give it to you.

This. I havent paid on mine in like 4 years because we didnt have it. If you get WIC or state aid usually that alone is reason enough for them to grant it. If not you just fill out a paper and mail it back. They will waive payments for a year (interest still gets added on) Then in the year if you still cant pay you can reapply.

Heck, my DH and I both work full-time, and my loans are still outrageous!

I agree with the others; request a deferment/forbearance.

Oh my goodness! You have to pay them back straightaway?? Over here, you only have to pay them back if you are earning over £25k/year and then you only have to pay back about £2/week. How is it fair to you to pay back student loans when you aren't using the degree/etc to get money?

Here where I am we have 6months after graduating to start paying them back. And if you decided to pay them back while in school you dont get charged interest. After you get slammed with interest. I paid my loan for a good 3yrs, every month like I was told. I only owed 5k, I still owe 5k. I will never pay them off.

That's awful   we pay only the inflation, so the value we pay back is the same as the value we borrowed, the amount is usually more. I dropped out of university and have about £6k in loans and have not payed a penny of them off simply because I haven't been able to. They are kept updated with your jobs and income and things and contact you when they want the money and only if you are able to pay it back. I dropped out over 2 years ago and haven't been earning over the threshold to pay them back and I haven't even been contacted by the company at all

Must be nice! I had to start paying mine back right away, and I didn't earn over 25k last year.

Ask for a forebarance to get it caught up then request a deferment.

You can defer it, but you will have to pay it. If you don't they will start garnishing wages and taking your tax returns. An AA isn't going to do anything for you, apply for a grant and get a BA and get a real job, your life will improve drastically.
