Hospital with no NICU?
posted 14th Feb
We went on our L&D tour last night and one of the things the nurse mentioned was that the hospital doesn't have a NICU, I really didn't think anything of it but the more I think about it the more worried I get :-/. I sort of wish I had known that prior but we did the tour last night and I'm scheduled to go in Monday for my c section. Would that worry you as well or am I being a nervous nelly?

I would not deliver in a hospital without a NICU.

I think you should be ok unless you have a history of preemies. I needed a good nicu because they thought dd might need it since she was so small. Good luck mama!

If your baby comes early, they will send you to deliver at a hospital that has the appropriate (level 1; level 2 etc) NICU.
My 36 weeker was born in a hospital with no NICU

This is how I feel but I think it's way too late in the game to switch hospitals, I wouldn't even know where to start

Everything was expected to be fine with Tanner, I think you've read my birth story. I might now have a 4 year old today if there was no NICU.
Plus, if something does happen you and your baby will be at different hospitals.

Well, baby won't be a preemie, so that's good. As long as your pregnancy doesn't have complications and they don't think there is anything wrong with the baby, then you should be OK. Do you know where the nearest hospital is that does have a NICU?
In the even baby does need NICU time they will more than likely transfer her to the nearest hosp NICU.
Try not to stress yourself out though, mama. More than likely baby will be just fine.

They might have a special care nursery instead. Basically our local hospital will take babies over 32 weeks gestation. Anything under that and they get sent via ambulence or helicopter (depending on urgency) to the hospitals in boston that have the higher level NICU's. Sometimes if you're early and having contractions or early dilation or whatever, you get sent to the higher level hospital via ambulence or helicopter depending on urgency, while you're still pregnant.
It's not as big a deal as it sounds. It's also very common. Not every hospital can afford or really needs a NICU. That doesn't mean they couldn't keep the baby stable in most situations until the baby gets to where he/she needs to go.

My son was never in the NICU, he went overdue actually and this time I'm due the 24th with a c section date of the 18th so I'm pretty confident that I will make it to the 18th. I just worry about things that could go wrong after the fact & I'd be stuck at this hospital if they fly her out to another hospital with a NICU- just typing that makes me want to cry

Manchester is the closest level 1 and Boston is the closest level 3, both a just over an hour away

It's stories like that that just make me want to be fully prepared for any situation

I had my 35 week at a hospital with no nicu. If there was something wrong she would have been airlifted to the nearest hospital with a nicu. Would they do that for you?

Yes they said the hospital they would airlift to would depend on the situation since there is a level 1 and a level 3 "close" by. It just worries me because I know I'd be stuck in this hospital while she was transferred somewhere else

WHen my LO was born and NEEDED a better nicu than my hospital could offer they flew her to the childrens hospital downtown

I live on an island, we don't have a big hospital. If you deliver and your baby needs the nicu then they get med flighted to children's in Boston, about a 20 minute flight. Luckily my babes didn't need that. But I know people that have...
