Does your baby smile @ strangers?

posted 14th Feb
My daughter is sooo serious, she doesn't smile for anyone really but me, her daddy & my mom. She barely even smiles for her paternal grandma and she has seen her since the day she was born. When people come over in stores to say hi & smile at her she just stares back at them and refues to even crack a little grin. I think she has smiled maybe two times at strangers since she started smiling. One time the girl was speaking in spanish at her and she just started grinning; I can't remember the other time.

When we went to the pedi for her 4 month check up she started started wailing when I handed her to the lady who checks her weight & the pedi. I have never seen her so upset. I know its normal to get stranger anxiety around this age, but my sisters baby is the same age & she has been smiling at everyone and everything since she was like 1.5 months old. My baby is so serious though, I hope that's not a sign of developmental issues down the road.

He picks and chooses. Some people get a smile, a lot don't. He's pretty outgoing I think, like me.

DD gave strangers the dirtiest looks until like 2. She hated men, still does but warms up a lot faster now. Doesn't like strange women either but they earn her trust faster, she's 3 now. Not one single "delay", it's just her personality.

At 4 months, no they did not smile for strangers. Then they did for a while if somebody smiled at them and they were in the mood. Now, at 8 months they rarely do again. They have developed some stranger anxiety now and are more likely to cry when strangers look at them.

That is how our oldest is, always cried around men even her own grandfather, except her Dad. She is three now too and doesn't cry anymore but still very shy.

Our youngest is the opposite, even at six months old she is more outgoing.

My 7 1/2 month old son used to smile at EVERYONE and EVERYTHING until just recently. The past little over a month or so he picks and chooses. Sometimes he doesn't even smile all the time for me, but always for daddy. He definitely prefers men.. I don't know if it's because he favors his dad or the tenor voice or what have you, but he will smile at men way before he will smile for women. He's always very serious now and looks like he's giving you a dirty look, haha. I work at a daycare and my manager was like, "he always looks at me like I'm crazy!"

My little boy smiles at EVERYONE. He has done this from around 6 months, I think he likes the attention from ladies. He will just stare at someone until he has their attention, then he goes looking for his next target

At the moment his new trick is to pretend he is shy, but giggles away when they start talking to him, he is 17 months old now and a right little charmer.
